What everyday dangers lurk? This is probably not the best topic for a bunch of us fretful Yorkie owner to discuss, but I'm hoping it will be helpful. What everyday dangers have you encountered with your Yorkie that caused you to stop and say, hmm, I've got to avoid that at all costs? Here's mine, and it happened yesterday. Elevators. Three of us hopped on an elevator with both dogs on leash. The dogs were a little jumpy in the strange surroundings. My wife was holding Eddie's leash. I had Jack's. Someone hit the up button and Eddie panicked at the same time and was heading for the open door. For a split second, I was mortified. I could picture him leaping out the door just as it closed on the leash. Who knows what would have happened. In a state of panic, could I have found the STOP button before it went up? Would the door have automatically opened because a small leash was caught? Or would the leash have become trapped on our side while Eddie was trapped on the other? I may have been worrying for nothing, but from now on I'm picking up both dogs in elevators. Too scary. |
Good post and informative. Warmly, Deborah |
Omg..i know exactly how you feel. When we visit my moms house we take the elevator up to the 15 floor and Snuggles is always desperate to run to my moms house and lucky for me the elevator sucks so the doors open and close a few times before it finally decides to move. She bolted out on the 11 floor and i was able to grab the door b4 it closed to get her. I thought i was gonna faint from my heart racing so fast. Its really scary. |

Wow, that's scary! I just took Max on an elevator for the first time a few weeks ago. I was holding him though, b/c we were in a hospital, and even though dogs are allowed on the unit I was going to, I'm not so sure they're welcome all over the hospital. I'm glad I was holding him, b/c he was none too excited about stepping into that "box" and then the doors sliding shut and it moving. We went on it several times and he seemed like he was a little more comfortable on it, but I wouldn't want to chance it. |
I had never given an elevator a thought. i am glad you posted that alert. lawn mowers............. next time I am passing by someone mowing the lawn...i pick them up. too many times stones have been thrown our way and with my dogs being lower to the ground they are more likely to get stoned. there is a lot of yard men working on several lawns some days and there will be several of them working on one lawn. they use a weed eater to edge and that has thrown some stones too. good topic, by the way! |
Yeah, might be a little smarter to pick the pups up next time... I always carry Meka unless we are outside on a walk or in a walking area.... |
great now i need prozac |
Thanks for bringing up the subject. I never would have thought of that. |
Thank you for posting the scare about the elevators! Never would have even considered this. |
Theres a high way parallel to my street and the people speed on my street so ever since I saw a dog get hit a few weeks ago I have been scared to death that my dog would get loose again and this time he wouldn't be so lucky =[.. Hes either come back or we've been able to catch him before he got close to the road or even out of the yard. |
OMG i would have freaked out!! Smart thinking hitting the stop button!! Thanks for posting this is a great thread! |
in the hospital i work in my dept is located on the second floor so every dog i take in and out has to go in the elevator. luckily the one we have has sensors in the door so if they run or if a head is sticking out the elevator will stop. it will also stop it the door bumps something. I too have thought about the dog running out and the leash getting stuck. so with little ones i carry them if they are nice and with big ones i reel them in close to me so they have no option of moving anywhere. |
Iam so affraid of elavators, I will climb the stairs if avaiable to me, I cant even think about what could of happen:( thanks for the info, |
My biggest fear is that we'll drop medicine on the floor (3 of us have stuff that we have to take everyday!). I'm so afraid a pill will fall on the floor, I won't be able to see it, and she will find it and eat it!! |
