| walking on a leash, SHE THINKS SHES THE BOSS! OK, I have a little delima... My little Bailey girl is just a piece of work, She walks on the leash pretty well and she wears a harness not a collar because she is so small and I dont want to put a strain on her neck. But sometimes when we are walking if she dosnt want to walk where we are walking or she sees that we are going back home she will plant her feet and just stare at me. As if to say MOMMMY I AM NOT GOING THERE! Shes really tiny so of course I can just pick her up and take her where I want but i have been doing this, along with scolding her but she just isnt getting the message... She still does it all the time! She thinks shes the boss! I know I probably should have been firmer with her when she was a pup and made her learn some basic obediance but its so hard when they are so little and cute to punish them... now she is 10 months old and thinks shes the boss! Any suggestions on how to break this? |

| Lacy does that too! She'll plant her feet and doesn't want to move. I kindof lift up on her harness and keep walking so she'll walk. She also pulls pretty bad.. I guess I should have trained her better, but she's a little dog so I didn't think it was that big of a deal

Donating YT 11K Club Member | yah you're def. not, like she will pull and run to go to the park but when it's time to leave she will not budge, she will just sit and look at me. If she doesnn't want to go she won't

Therapy Dog Donating Member | OK - this is what our trainer told us to do - how to teach Izzy to walk with us. Take some of her favorite treats and take them with you when you are walking. When she stops - you stop - then when she starts to walk with you - give her a treat and keep this up your entire walk. I use a clicker as well and she knows when I click it's time to get a move on. It's natural for them to stop and snif and explore but when you speak your cue to leave they should be movin along with you. Keep your cue word the same. Ours is "OK lets go."

I do that with Sophie. She knows to stop if i say it, i taught her to stop before crossing the street, like before i cross the street even if i have the light i stop and tell her stop and then i saw lets go and she follows. I do this just in case anything ever happens she will not run across any street. I also always carry treats with me on walks. I am still working with Teddy and London though. London is not that bad, but Teddy would run across a street and keep going thinking it's 'fun' if i let him I am going to save up and take him to training classes!

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | morgan is very good walking on a leash 95% of the time. She does get excited if she sees another dog or person coming towards us and in this case she will try and pull. i correct this behavior by giving her a tug on the leash along with the caesar "shhht' sound. she knows that sound means 'no' so she'll stop the behavior she is currently doing. As far as stopping and not wanting to walk, i'll tell her to 'come on' or 'walk with me' or 'walking' and give her a tug in the direction i want to go, then i just continue to walk away (works best on a retractable because eventually if you keep walking they will run to catch up to you instead of being left alone). Or if on a short leash and harness walk right next to them and pull straight up on the leash a little. this lifts their front legs so they can't lie back on them. if you go in front and pull this will cause the dog to pull back and lie down, which will not cause them to walk.

| I can't give advice.. We got my dog when he was two and he didnt know how to walk on a leash because he was used to being on his runner or running out in the woods.. Well he hasn't learned yet now that it has been five years. I have to lure him into his crate and to go inside. |

| She got mommy to pick her up and carry her didn't she? Try encouraging her with a tasty treat. Preferably stinky. It will work, I promise. And don't pick her up. Treat her like she is 80 pounds.

| ah such good advice and thank you all so much! The only problem I have is that alot of the advice includes treats which i cant give her... My vet said that her paincrease (or however you spell it) was very dark when she went in to spay her which was because I was feeding her those doggy gourmet treats (that are supposed to be made of 100% natural ingrediants) anyway, she said that it could become something more serious and for now on to give her nothing except her regular food. =/ it made me sad to hear this because she loved those little gourmet treats so now I cant give her anything... chattiesmom makes great treats called yorkie yummies that would be prefect. they are crunchy and bite size and only made up of 4 ingredients i believe. however there are the methods that don't involve treats. i'd try those first.
