Safety of microchiped question

There are like 4 threads about this now!

I agree with MyFairLacy, everything seems to cause cancer and I beleive that the risk of them getting lost or stolen far outweighs the risk of a tumour.

wel my point not really on cancer.. my point was the fact that cancer has been a reality in my life. Its something that will effect all my decisions. Its just nice to be informed about everything thas all.

There's not much proof in that article... First of all, lab rats and mice get cancer so easily. It's almost pointless to compare cancer-causing agents in mice to humans..or dogs and cats for that matter. Secondly, out of hundreds of thousands of dogs and cats chipped in the past 15 years, there has been no report of chips causing cancer. A study was done that found 2 dogs with sarcomas in the neck region: 1 which had a sarcoma around the chip and was said to be caused by the chip and 1 in which the cause of cancer was unknown. Okay.....so 1, maybe 2, dogs out of hundreds of thousands developed a tumor because of a microchip? That's an extrememly small amount... Plus, there is always going to be a risk with anything - there is always one out of how every many thousands that could have a reaction to a vaccine or die from anasthesia...And yeah, it sucks to be that one...but overall it's such a tiny risk..and the chances of having a problem are so small. There is a much larger risk of my dog being lost or stolen than her microchip causing her to develop cancer. I would much rather have my dog returned to me. I think a lot of these "lab rat" studies are a bunch of bull anyway...like sweet & low causing cancer....yeah, when a lab rat gets its body weight in saccharine every day for like a year! It's just rediculous. You can't take every study at face value...you really have to know how to interpret the results... Anyway, I will continue to have my pets chipped because I believe to to be almost 100% safe. It always surprises me to hear that people are afraid to get their pets chipped...


Also don't believe everything you hear/read...most of it's a bunch of hype. If chips were really dangerous, we would have already heard of a lot of dogs and cats getting cancer since we've been chipping for 15 years!

I agree 100%! I think the benefits of chips far outweigh any possible risk. There are risks to everything, crossing the street, getting our kids or pets vaccinated, anesthesia for us or our pets - getting out of bed in the morning is a risk. I'm going to ask my vet about chips and I will believe what she tells me. I have a vet who actually loves the animals and wants what's best for them. She's a friend and I trust her. Let's not get in panic mode here and all rush out and have microchips removed!

I am thinking about doing this with my new baby. I spoke with the vet about this tonight at our checkup. She new right away that I had been reading the internet. She told me that this study was done on rats and mice and that it was only a 5 percent rate on this "species". Dogs are a different species, as we know, and cannot possibly compare them. She said that even "if" the rate was 5 percent for dogs, she would still have it done because the risk of not finding your lost pet is greater than these tumors. There are alot of lost pets that come her way, and she has to turn them over to the pound....if they were chipped than they have a greater chance of getting home. Just some food for thought.

I am glad to see this discussion. The article was in our paper last night.
I must admit I read it and then re-read it again just to clarify.
My knee jerk reaction was great now look at what you have gone and done. I had Annie microchipped last year.
But after re-reading the article what I came to realize was this was done on mice, that the article even said are extremely sensitive. Which I did not realize, I thought mice were hardy little buggers!

Right now, today, I do not regret having her microchipped. All I have to do is remember back almost 1 year ago, when I had gotten out the car with her and this man and woman blocked my vehicle so it could not go forward and started screaming at me "That's my dog, That's my dog, YOU stole my dog!" My response was "WHAT you think this is your dog? I flew to TN to get her! This is not your dog!!!" I got back in my car, with them moving towards me, put it in reverse and left. Called my husband who said "are they following you?" Following me?!!! I checked, no they were not.
I soon found out, that an elderly couple had their yorkie ripped from their hands in one of our local stores and the woman was making a bee line for the doors when she was stopped by employees.

I think each of us has to do what is right for us.

My Jessica is NOT microchipped for same reason - I am against of some *** in my dog's body. For same reasons I am against of too much medicine/antibiotic without very serious problems when it really needed.

Are all suppose to last or is it certain companies? Because her vet did say she needed to renew after aa few years passed and it stopped working. I know I can be researching this on my own but if I can get help on here I'll take it!

I guess its alarming... However, doesnt pretty much everything have a side effect these days... To the point that, drinking tap water can be harmful now... If we fell for every warning that new studies/media puts out there - we'd all be living in a BUBBLE... Its what we make of it... and if we make the best of it, you cant expect worse!
