| Help, Harlem isn't really eating anymore! Ok, so Harlem lost 2 teeth last week and freaked me out completely. All of last week, he was barely eating so I would put some Karo syrup on his food to make him eat it. That's what the vet said. But anyway, so he ate 75% of what he usually eats. Now, it's a whole week later and he still isn't eating well. Should I take him to the vet or do you think maybe he doesn't have an appetite because of the teeth falling out? My fiance thinks it might be heartworms but I don't think so cause we give him the inceptor heart meds every month. I'm scared!!! Help.... |

| Just wanted to say, by no means is he weak or frail or laying around. He is so hyper and jumping all over the place and out of control, his normal self! |

| What are you feeding him, dry or wet food? What do you mean by not eating well? Is he eating 50% less than normal? Less than that? I would stick with wet while he is teething.

| I surely would not be putting kayro syrup in his food every day. That can really throw off his sugar levels. Dogs and pups go through stages where they don't eat a lot. Mine do it. My Mom has 3 right now not eating so much. 2 of my 4 Yorkies don't have their usual appetite right now. If he is drinking enough and eating a little and seems fine in every other way (pooping firmly and peeing), he is probably just fine. Nothing against what anyone else says, but I never feed wet. He needs those puppy teeth to come out or you'll be getting them pulled out by the vet. Last edited by Julz; 09-07-2007 at 06:04 PM. |

| i feed him feed him Purina Pro Plan for puppies and it's dry. We normally feed him twice daily, once in the morn and once in the evening. Now we don't even have to feed him in the evenings because he doesn't eat all from the morning, so basically he is only eating once a day and when he eats it's only a little bit. |

| Oh, that's good. I do remember panicking myself when this happened the first few times. A vet will assure you that a dog will NOT starve itsefl to death. A word of advice from me would be to not start trying a lot of other things out of your fridge that you think will tempt him...he may get very sick from this. If it would make you feel more comfortable though, you could boil some boneless skinless chicken breast and break some up in his kibble (squishing it so it will all stick together). Hope it works for you, we can go crazy worrying about these little buggers we love so very much. |

| LOL! You could put a little lowfat cottage cheese in there if you have any. Actually, I wouldn't force him if he seems fine. Like I said, they all go through it. Just watch him closely and make sure he is drinking. |

| 4th of July he weighed 6 pds, he's a big boy compared to the 3pds we have on here! But that was the 4th, I don't know what he actually weighs now but he doesn't seem to be losing any weight so far. I don't know if I should be concerned but it has been 2 weeks as of today. |

| Not eating is not a symptom of heart worms. If he had heart worms, he would basically act "out of shape" - getting out of breath easily and panting and making a raspy hacking kindof noise. Teething could be a lot of the reason why he doesn't want to eat or he may just not like the food you're feeding him. Why don't you try a new food? You could even give him some premium canned food. Purina One isn't a very good food - if you want to feed kibble or canned I would go with Merrick, Canidae, California Natural, Wellness, Innova, Nature's Variety...

| My li'l one hasn't been eating much lately also....she just turned 7 mths today and for the past few weeks instead of her eating her morning meal and then again in the evening as she used to... she barely touches her food during the day and then at night when I'm sleeping she cleans her bowl.....She is still drinking the same amount of water and her potty habits haven't changed....I was told by the pet store where I purchase her food that their appetite normally decreases between 6-8 mths of age....I tried putting her kibble in an empty water bottle and she liked working for her food, but even now that doesn't seem to be working. She is still just as active and feisty as always and I have noticed that when I gave her her "good girl" treats (yorkie yummies) she was having a hard time chewing them....(due to her teething) the past few days she now seems to be able to chomp much better on her treats so I'm hoping that her eating habits pick up again also....
