| My mother in law takes him once a week to her apartment and they spend ALL day together playing. I wish she could do it more often though but she's doing us a favor so I dont want to ask her to pick him up more than once a week. |

| I totally see where you are coming from since we both live in NYC. I wish i could stay home with him all day but unfortunatley i dont have money like that. But just like you i play with him before and after i get home and i take him on walks the weekends we go to the parks. So dont stress yourself out it was hard for me too when i first got Rocky but the bills have to be paid and untill i strike it rich it's going to be like this for a while. so dont worry you are a great mommy

| I was going to say that he is left alone way to much but I just read that someone takes him one day a week. If you are home on the weekends that means he is only alone for forty hours a week then. That is pretty normal but I would get a dog walker in once a day.

| Not a problem it's hard for us here in the big city although i live in queens, but just like you said it's hard finding a dog walker and in my neighborhood i have seen to many fliers with little yorkies missing. I would not feel comfortable with someone walking him it just scares me you know. where in NY do you live ?

| I know how hard it is to leave your pup for that amount of time Buddy is left for 9hrs Mon-Fri and he is just fine. He sleeps all day. When he was a pup it was harder for him but I knew I would be retiring in a couple of years and we would be together after, everyday. He has it good. I play 1/2 hr with him in the am and arrive home around 5:30 and we spend the night together. I have no problem with this and neither does he. It stinks that we have to do this but they are happy, safe and loved. That's more than 1/2 the dogs in this world, unfortunately. They get into a routine fast. When it gets dark out earlier I have the lamps on a timer so he has light early until I get home. He greets me at the door every evening. He never has an accident and is so very good. THis is my 3rd dog that stayed home during the day with no problem. You just have to be sure you make it up to them in other ways and spend quality time in the am before leaving for work. It will be ok. |

I get goose bumps just from the thought of my little angel being lost. I live in Riverdale, Bronx but I work in Manhattan. Do you work in the city too? | |

| See it's not so bad after all i think when they are used to having you home on a daily basis then you change i think it's harder. But its been like this since the begining so i guess he's used to it by now. That is true about them being safe and in a loving home because just like you said ARCHIE there are so many dogs out there that are being hurt and abandoned. mynameishadow ohh ok yeah i work in midtown manhattan

| Therapy Dog Donating Member | K - I'll chime in here too. Izzy is left alone too for 9-10 hours because it's life...we both have to work to pay bills but husband is home on Mondays so she is really only home alone for 4 days (then if you include some holidays/vac - sometimes she is only left alone for 2-3 days per week). Do I miss her - yes - but you know what? She really adjust well and boy do we spend quality time with her. I spend 2 hours in the morning with her before I go to work at 7:30am and then from 5:30pm on she is with us constantly - we go to clicker training, take her on walks, take her shopping in her little carry bag, visit people, etc., etc. She is in her x-pen (with tons of room), food, toys, chew stuff and her everlasting treat ball, her little tent/hut bed, and we leave Animal Planet on for her all day, lights o timers, radio sometimes. We set up a video camera once and she was fine - she plays and eats, but most of all she sleeps!! She got into her routine so fast...and she is totally a well socialized and happy doggie. As others have said - don't beat yourself up on this one - we all wish we could stay home with our furkids but some of us can't. Unless I hit the Mega Millions..hahaha!

| That is a very long time..I work part time,10am-2pm..I personally would not leave my dogs much longer than that without making other arrangements, paying someone to come in half way through to exercise and play with your dog for half an hour. It may be worth thinking about getting your dog a sibling too?..then they would keep each other company...dogs are pack animals and are not meant to be left alone long periods. Don't be too hard on yourself though..you can work this out sensibly.
