| Questions about an AKC breeder? If I bought a puppy without getting the papers that day, and the breeder is going to mail them to me, is there a way to check and see if she actually has papers on him.. can i find out if there are any litters of hers registered through AKC? |

| The breeder should have the papers signed and give to you to mail in with a small fee. If I was told they would "mail" me the papers, then I'd pay only half for the dog till the papers came in. |

| Yes, you can check with AKC. i know over the years my husband has sold his beagles there have been quite a few times the papers have been delayed. but AKC is better now than they used to be about getting them right out. |

| call AKC directly and ask for the litter registration dept and just tell them the problem. it only takes them a min ute to look it up on the computer as long as you have the breeders name and know how old the puppy is. it also helps if you know the parents name. but not really neccesary. |

| Mmmm my contract reads you do not get papers until I have proof of spay nueter.......Since, I've never had a problem with the wording...If half was only payed for a dog....then the dog wouldn't be leaving my house.

If a breeder does not for any reason have the AKC papers to give along with the buyer, then there should be a reciept or contract stating how much was paid for the puppy AND there should be a statement on that paperwork for the buyer to take home with the puppy stating that AKC ( or Canadian Kennel Club in Canada) registration papers will be provided. On my contract when selling a puppy, I also list the registration numbers and registered names of sire and dam and litter registration number of the puppy. Here in Canada we are required to tattoo or microchip any dog or puppy before it leaves our premises and the tattoo number is also listed on the contract so the buyer knows exactly which puppy they are getting. Anybody buying a puppy sold as registered wtih AKC or Canadian Kennel Club registered papers should expect to get a receipt or contract with this information on it before you fork over your money. Without this info, you have no recourse and AKC and Canadian Kennel Club cannot help you, it becomes a he said/she said with nothing in writing to verify even where you got the dog. That 's why this is one more reason buying through the Internet unless you know the breeder very well is a bad idea, as you don't have the one on one contact with the breeder to be sure everything is in place.

| My assumption is that all breeders provide a contract/guarantee...Silly me.....but, then again, a contract is only as good as the 2 people signing it. In addition, I always provide a minimal of a 7 generation pedigree, with Registration #s of each dog within the pedigree. Mary[/QUOTE]

From the phone calls I get AFTER someone purchased a puppy somewhere, not all breeders provide what should be provided and without something in writing the buyer has no recourse. Hopefully, any prospective puppy buyers on this forum will know what to ask for and expect before they purchase by reading our posts.
