1st day - how am I doing? Well, today is my first REAL day home with my new puppy "Rocky". He slept thru the night, hardly a peep (I, however, got NO sleep, kept checking on him). BUT, such a tot (6 weeks old). I wondered if any of you raised your doggy from that young of an age? Anything special I should do ya think? I keep holding him, kissing him, lettin' him play with oodles of chew toys, bought him baby dry kibble, and moist food. Not bringing him outside yet for potty training until he's had all shots, but he's going potty on the disposable pads OK. When he plays, he chews my fingers a lot...trying to tell him no firmly and hand him a chew toy instead. I feel like he should be on a bottle with milk or something cause he's so young....... ;) Gimme thoughts - any! :animal-sm |
He IS young to be without his mother - what does he weigh? Many on here will have good advice for you, we have never had a pup that young but it sounds as if you are doing all you can and you will sleep once you relax, I was the same! Ana xx |
I got mine at 10 weeks so I'm not much help..BUT..he was eating dried kibble moistened with water and I was giving him 1 tsp. of white rice, he slept SO MUCH in those days..lol, the change is amazing..Maximus is only 16 weeks and I can see the differnce..TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES...they get so big..I would say you are doing great..how much does he weigh?..and what kind of food do you have him on?..there are many great recommendation in the food and diet section and if you need any help everyone here is so knowledgeable |
You sound like a great new mommy! How did you happen to get him at 6 weeks? |
Congrats on him! Its such a wonderful feeling to have a new pup. I remeber how I felt when I first got Bella in January, It was WONDERFUL! It will only get better. Takes lots of pictures, they'll change right before your eyes before you know it! |

is rice something i should try too? |
my vet didn't really like the idea..but it helps for the diarheaa that they sometimes get (breeder said from going to a new home and the stress..so I gave to him)..It almost gave the food a oatmeal like consistency..Maximus was 2.1 lbs at 10 weeks..so he was close to your babies size...I am surprised the breeder let him go that early..usually they keep the babies with the mother and littermates till 10-12 weeks, good luck and take lots of pictures to show us..and please if you have any questions we are here |
If he eats well , I would give him only canned food mix with warm water . My friend Marilyn , recently loose a 6 weeks puppy when he was eating baby dry kibbles . 6 weeks is very young so a person should extra cares . Sorry , if I might have scared you but I was at her home when it happened , we rush the pup at the clinic but he died there . |
Oh, he is so tiny. Best wishes to both of you. |
I got Kacee at 6 weeks. She weighed 2-1/2 lb. I started out by grinding her puppy food, adding water, and adding about 3/4 teaspoon Gerber chicken with chicken gravy baby food. She loved it and has never been sick. (Just be sure you don't give them any baby food with onion ingredients.) She still has trouble eating the dry puppy food, so we just sit and I feed it to her one pebble at a time for a snack. :D I now feed her two meals of that and two meals of canned puppy food. I've probably created a bigger baby, but so be it if I have! Muffin was spoiled rotten, too. However, if anyone has any better ideas, I'm open to hearing them, too. ;) |
Sounds like you are being a really good mommy! Good luck |
