I got my baby Shelby at 6 and a half weeks last Wednesday. We feed our puppy Purina One for puppies watered down twice a day and she eats it all up.

I was thinking about baby food too, only cause so young of a pup. Well, the dry food story scared me a little, so I just now, fed Rocky canned puppy food, moistened with warm water. I think I will make sure all his food is good and creamy for a few weeks.

Good tips you guys - go write a book and make lots of money. But, give me some of it when you become millionaires!!! :D ;)

It sounds like you are doing everything right...6 weeks is very young but that doesn't mean that anything is necessary wrong...Sailor was about 7 weeks when we got her and we never had any problems with her...I would continue doing whatever the breeder told you to do!!! Have fun and take lots of pictures while you can...they will grow up so fast!!!

I got Roxy at 6 weeks, too. She was also slightly under two pounds. Things I learned, always make sure they go potty before bedtime, Roxy slept with us too. Never ever leave him unattened on the couch, they're too small to safely jump down, Roxy did this once and landed on her little face, it was horrible and I felt so bad. And just keep him away from places and other animals where he could get parvo, which sounds like you're already doing. Puppy food is fine, the vet gave us Pro Plan dry kibble and I also fed her the Science Diet moist puppy food, which is what the breeder was feeding, she didn't have any trouble eating the puppy food. Have fun with your new puppy!

Your baby needs to be fed at LEAST 3 times preferably either free fed or food put down 4 times a day. Babies should not be cut down to three times a day til they are close to 6 months. Then fed 2 times a day as adults. ..I suggest free feeding but that is really hard to do when they are young enough to need the food softened. Please feed that little one more times a day...They are growing..JMO

congratulations on your pup. When we got chewy it was like being a new mom. They are like you kids. We didnt get sleep the first week until we figured out his routine.. good luck though. sounds like your doing a good job. they just needs lots of love...

Thanks for the posts everyone. Fingers crossed that he will he more than a bite a meal (fed him twice today with only a few bites eaten each time) and he will be fed twice more before he goes to bed tonight.

Has anyone ever given their pups warm cows milk to drink? Grocery store brand. He's drinking only tiny bits of water...... :confused:

My vet does not like milk given to puppies. I have a friend who gives hers goats milk when she first starts weaning but later, just softens the food with it. I have always smashed the dry kibble and mix with a wee bit of canned puppy food and warm water. Their teeth are not in far enough at this age to do much chewing. Maybe if the food is softened a bit more, your baby would eat more. I would be concerned about hypoglycemia at sucha young age so just make sure you get some food in your sweetie at least 4 times a day or more. IMO
Give that baby kisses for us..

Buddy was 6 and half weeks when we got him, he had trouble with dry food used to try to chew then spit it out, when i looked he didnt have any back teeth yet! Vet told us to give him small bowl of goats milk everyday and he still loves it now @ 16 weeks. what yr doing already is great loads of love and cuddles something we ALL love lol

Hmmmm.....Goats milk.....can you get that at the regular grocery stores?

Congrats on your new puppy! I have not gotten my yorkie puppy yet but I can tell you that I got Kirby (rat terrier) at age 6 or 7 weeks. Everything turned out fine although he was a bit young. I do remember feeding him softened dog food with a special milk that I got at the pets store. Why not call your local petstore and see what they have. I can't remember the name of it. Sounds like you've got a handle on it though. :)

My puppy is 8 weeks old, but I got her at 7 weeks. I would give yours a little sugar in his water or give it some nutri cal or White Kayro syrup before you leave it alone, My baby had a seizure because I thought she was just tired but her sugar level was low from not eating much . Even if you are not having the problem I would do it to be safe untill she is a little older. It happened so fast, if I had not checked on her she may have died. I don't want to scare you, it's just that is very young to be away from Mom, I found out the hard way. Congratulations on your new fur baby :)
