1st day - how am I doing? Well, today is my first REAL day home with my new puppy "Rocky". He slept thru the night, hardly a peep (I, however, got NO sleep, kept checking on him). BUT, such a tot (6 weeks old). I wondered if any of you raised your doggy from that young of an age? Anything special I should do ya think? I keep holding him, kissing him, lettin' him play with oodles of chew toys, bought him baby dry kibble, and moist food. Not bringing him outside yet for potty training until he's had all shots, but he's going potty on the disposable pads OK. When he plays, he chews my fingers a lot...trying to tell him no firmly and hand him a chew toy instead. I feel like he should be on a bottle with milk or something cause he's so young....... ;) Gimme thoughts - any! :animal-sm |
He IS young to be without his mother - what does he weigh? Many on here will have good advice for you, we have never had a pup that young but it sounds as if you are doing all you can and you will sleep once you relax, I was the same! Ana xx |
I got mine at 10 weeks so I'm not much help..BUT..he was eating dried kibble moistened with water and I was giving him 1 tsp. of white rice, he slept SO MUCH in those days..lol, the change is amazing..Maximus is only 16 weeks and I can see the differnce..TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES...they get so big..I would say you are doing great..how much does he weigh?..and what kind of food do you have him on?..there are many great recommendation in the food and diet section and if you need any help everyone here is so knowledgeable |
You sound like a great new mommy! How did you happen to get him at 6 weeks? |
Congrats on him! Its such a wonderful feeling to have a new pup. I remeber how I felt when I first got Bella in January, It was WONDERFUL! It will only get better. Takes lots of pictures, they'll change right before your eyes before you know it! |
Thanks everyone! He is 1.9 lbs. Breeder wanted to have pups home with new owners right away........ :( |

is rice something i should try too? |
my vet didn't really like the idea..but it helps for the diarheaa that they sometimes get (breeder said from going to a new home and the stress..so I gave to him)..It almost gave the food a oatmeal like consistency..Maximus was 2.1 lbs at 10 weeks..so he was close to your babies size...I am surprised the breeder let him go that early..usually they keep the babies with the mother and littermates till 10-12 weeks, good luck and take lots of pictures to show us..and please if you have any questions we are here |
If he eats well , I would give him only canned food mix with warm water . My friend Marilyn , recently loose a 6 weeks puppy when he was eating baby dry kibbles . 6 weeks is very young so a person should extra cares . Sorry , if I might have scared you but I was at her home when it happened , we rush the pup at the clinic but he died there . |
Oh, he is so tiny. Best wishes to both of you. |
I got Kacee at 6 weeks. She weighed 2-1/2 lb. I started out by grinding her puppy food, adding water, and adding about 3/4 teaspoon Gerber chicken with chicken gravy baby food. She loved it and has never been sick. (Just be sure you don't give them any baby food with onion ingredients.) She still has trouble eating the dry puppy food, so we just sit and I feed it to her one pebble at a time for a snack. :D I now feed her two meals of that and two meals of canned puppy food. I've probably created a bigger baby, but so be it if I have! Muffin was spoiled rotten, too. However, if anyone has any better ideas, I'm open to hearing them, too. ;) |
Sounds like you are being a really good mommy! Good luck |

I got my baby Shelby at 6 and a half weeks last Wednesday. We feed our puppy Purina One for puppies watered down twice a day and she eats it all up. |

Good tips you guys - go write a book and make lots of money. But, give me some of it when you become millionaires!!! :D ;) |
Hey - I just posted some of Rocky's pics in the photo gallery for ya'll !! |
It sounds like you are doing everything right...6 weeks is very young but that doesn't mean that anything is necessary wrong...Sailor was about 7 weeks when we got her and we never had any problems with her...I would continue doing whatever the breeder told you to do!!! Have fun and take lots of pictures while you can...they will grow up so fast!!! |
I just looked at Rocky's pictures. He's SO tiny!! He's adorable!! |
I got Roxy at 6 weeks, too. She was also slightly under two pounds. Things I learned, always make sure they go potty before bedtime, Roxy slept with us too. Never ever leave him unattened on the couch, they're too small to safely jump down, Roxy did this once and landed on her little face, it was horrible and I felt so bad. And just keep him away from places and other animals where he could get parvo, which sounds like you're already doing. Puppy food is fine, the vet gave us Pro Plan dry kibble and I also fed her the Science Diet moist puppy food, which is what the breeder was feeding, she didn't have any trouble eating the puppy food. Have fun with your new puppy! |

Your baby needs to be fed at LEAST 3 times preferably either free fed or food put down 4 times a day. Babies should not be cut down to three times a day til they are close to 6 months. Then fed 2 times a day as adults. ..I suggest free feeding but that is really hard to do when they are young enough to need the food softened. Please feed that little one more times a day...They are growing..JMO |
congratulations on your pup. When we got chewy it was like being a new mom. They are like you kids. We didnt get sleep the first week until we figured out his routine.. good luck though. sounds like your doing a good job. they just needs lots of love... |
Thanks for the posts everyone. Fingers crossed that he will he more than a bite a meal (fed him twice today with only a few bites eaten each time) and he will be fed twice more before he goes to bed tonight. Has anyone ever given their pups warm cows milk to drink? Grocery store brand. He's drinking only tiny bits of water...... |
My vet does not like milk given to puppies. I have a friend who gives hers goats milk when she first starts weaning but later, just softens the food with it. I have always smashed the dry kibble and mix with a wee bit of canned puppy food and warm water. Their teeth are not in far enough at this age to do much chewing. Maybe if the food is softened a bit more, your baby would eat more. I would be concerned about hypoglycemia at sucha young age so just make sure you get some food in your sweetie at least 4 times a day or more. IMO Give that baby kisses for us.. |
Buddy was 6 and half weeks when we got him, he had trouble with dry food used to try to chew then spit it out, when i looked he didnt have any back teeth yet! Vet told us to give him small bowl of goats milk everyday and he still loves it now @ 16 weeks. what yr doing already is great loads of love and cuddles something we ALL love lol |

puppy Congrats on your new puppy! I have not gotten my yorkie puppy yet but I can tell you that I got Kirby (rat terrier) at age 6 or 7 weeks. Everything turned out fine although he was a bit young. I do remember feeding him softened dog food with a special milk that I got at the pets store. Why not call your local petstore and see what they have. I can't remember the name of it. Sounds like you've got a handle on it though. :) |
My puppy is 8 weeks old, but I got her at 7 weeks. I would give yours a little sugar in his water or give it some nutri cal or White Kayro syrup before you leave it alone, My baby had a seizure because I thought she was just tired but her sugar level was low from not eating much . Even if you are not having the problem I would do it to be safe untill she is a little older. It happened so fast, if I had not checked on her she may have died. I don't want to scare you, it's just that is very young to be away from Mom, I found out the hard way. Congratulations on your new fur baby :) |
