| Rabies vaccine... Hello all, I took Violet to the vet today for her third distemper vaccine. We are not doing the Corona or Giardia or Lyme now if ever (much to the vets dismay). I am just too concerned about over vaccinating. The vet wanted to do her Rabies today.... I deferred, because I thought I read on here that you are supposed to wait until they are older to get that? Violet is only 14 weeks old?? Is she too young at 14 weeks to get her rabies shot? Even if she's not too young, I didn't want to do too many vaccines in 1 day -- and prefer to space them out. Thanks guys!!

| I am not sure what the best age is for the rabies vaccine but it is good that you waited and didn't let them do more than one in a day. As for the other vaccines the vet wants your dog to get, I wouldn't listen unless you are in an outbreak area. Even then it may be best not to vaccinate.

| Rabies I would suggest making another appointment in 2 weeks to get the rabies. I spaced all Feather's vaccines out because she is so small. 2 lb at 19 weeks |

| For some reason, I had the "6" month thing in my head. I'm glad I didn't do it today. I'll take her back to get it later. Thanks!!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I think the youngest is 16 weeks, but many wait until 6 months. My vet also tried to push corona, bordatella, lepto. lymes, giardia (and not bc of $, they're included in my plan) - but I said no. It can be UNcomfortable. I felt like saying "Are YOU up to date on the latest literature and the incidence/prevalence of these diseases???"

| Bella had her Rabies vaccine at 17 weeks. I do not think I would have had them do it either being she is only 14 weeks old. Good thing you decided not to, you just never know. |

It is SOOO frustrating!!! Are you using a Banfield? (we are and these are also included in my "plan"), but just because they are "free" to me, doesn't mean I want to shoot up my dog with them! I am just INCREDIBLY THANKFUL that I have found this forum and that I'm doing my homework on everything before taking her to the vet. If not, I have NO doubt that I would have accepted all of the vaccines that they have tried so hard to push on me.

| As a breeder/exhibitor I recommend to my new families that rabies not be given prior to 6 months of age. I have it written in my contracts and book of instructions that I send home with each pup. No lepto, corona or lyme, especially lepto, too many yorkies have suffered adverse reactions (death) as there system does not do well absorbing vaccines....

But yes, it is SO frustrating when I feel I am more up to date on the latest vaccine literature, over-vaccination information, and incidence/prevalence. I just don't get it. I know vets are busy, but it is shocking just how little they sometimes know about the latest information about published studies by their peers. It feels confrontational sometimes as I advocate for what I believe is best for my babies, and it shouldn't be that way. Grrrr!
