| We Are Not on Speaking Terms Well, we're over it, actually. But yesterday, Demi was HORRIBLE. All day. I was going to drive about 45 minutes to pick up something I'd bought. I decided to take Demi. She hasn't been in the car much this summer, and for a few months she had no car seat. I'd recently replaced the car seat so I wanted her to get used to using it again. Of course, Demi is telepathic. As soon as I decided to take her along, she started acting up. I was still sitting on the couch wondering what to wear when the drama began. First -- the Pooh of Rage. Then -- the rarely seen Puddle of Hysteria. Then -- the really annoying leaping up and snapping at my pants seat. Yes, she does that. But she only does it when she's coming with me -- she knows that if I have my schoolbag or my dressy purse that she's not coming with me, and then she just watches me quietly from the couch. She is a good dog except for travel -- which is terrible, because I specifically got a Yorkie so I could take her with me traveling! She started the whining about 3 minutes into the drive. The whining progressed into ear-splitting, nerve-shattering, make-you-crazy yelping and screaming. SCREAMING. She used to get hysterical like this when I stopped the car, but yesterday it was the entire ride. Let me tell you, it is really embarrassing to pull up someplace and have this screeching monster throwing a fit that can be heard a mile away. People must think I'm beating her to death. I thought I would lose my mind yesterday. She hits a note with her yelps that cuts right through me. I'm not a yeller, and I don't believe that yelling at a dog is useful in any way, but as the minutes ticked by and the ear-splitting shrieking went on, I heard myself screaming, "SHUT UP!" It was like a scene from The Exorcist. I have tried shaking the seat when she starts yelling. I've tried bribing her with treats. I've tried petting her continually to keep her calm in the car. Nothing works. She's a smart dog and I've taught her a ton of tricks and commands, but I can't get her to behave in the car. And she's gotten much worse, apparently. Anyway, on the ride home I was so upset with her. I told her, "You are never coming in the car with me again!" She turned her back to me and laid down. I swear, she is the smartest dog. The sulking didn't last, though. More yelping. At home, she continued to be a huge PITA. She kept whining and being irritating. I refused to interact with her -- I've never been mad at her before! -- so she sat on the arm of the sofa and stared at me imploringly until I petted her. My dog trainer says that after you correct your dog, he will avoid you for a bit, but then he will come to you at some point and you should pet him -- not enough to reward him, just enough to let him know the drama is over. Well, today I'm sure Demi's forgotten all about it, but I'm still upset. |

| Well, I don't blame you - I wouldn't be over it either. Wow! What an awful experience. Nothing like a Yorkie screaming in your ear to get your attention huh?! I might have given thought to a muzzle (YK) right about then! OMGoodness what a little stinker. I wonder what in the world gets into them to make them behave that way? Tink doesn't like car rides, but she just stands the whole time with her head down facing me. It's sad, but at least she's not screaming. I sure hope your baby calms down soon. I'm afraid I can't offer any advice. |

| OMG, Is it horrible that I was dying laughing reading your tale of woe???? That ear-splitting noise that they can make? That sound different than their already-annoying-bark-sound? Yeah, I know that sound!! Your nerves had to be completely frayed by the time you got home. I'm surprised you could even drive!!

| Paddington would make that horrible noise when he first got his carseat, too. My solution was to take him everywhere, sometimes just driving around, and I would give him REALLY good treats throughout the ride. I also put his favorite blankie and one of his favorite toys in the seat with him.... sometimes even a bully stick. (Having a yorkie is like having a kid sometimes, I swear it!!! can't go anywhere w/out blankie, teddy, and binky aka bully stick!!!!) I would also be sure to take him to super fun places like Petsmart, or the park. He LOVES going to those places, and now everytime I get his travel bag ready he assumes we're going someplace awesome and hops right into the car! It took about two weeks of just driving him around before he stopped screaming.... sometimes he still does it if I have to run inside somewhere without him (like into the gas station to pay) It is embarassing. good luck! -O

| It sounds like it would be best for both of you if she stayed at home. I'm sorry that it didn't work out like you wanted.

| What a day trip you had!!!! I guess some dogs like to travel and others do not. Toby loves to ride in the front seat (previous owner held him in her lap) and so he is constantly wanting to get in the front seat but I block his only route. He is not a barker but he just is restless. We have a maltese and she loves the car and curls up on the back seat and sleeps until we get where we are going and this has helped with Toby's restlessness. He is now starting to lay down next to her rather than to keep trying to get up front with us. He is such a lovebug but he is safer in the back seat.

| I would have had to turn around and bring her back home. That shrilling yipe they give when their mad does go right through you. I hope all is forgiven soon, as I'm sure she really loves you.

| oh girl I feel your pain a little bit. One of mine HATES the car! Car rides are ANNOYING at best! I actually learned to turn up the radio a little louder than he is being and sing along and not even LOOK at him. This works almost all the time! He does quiet down every time and sulks ... but at least its not that ear piercing SHREIKING that makes you want to throw yourself out the window while the car is still in motion!!!

| Chewy has been going to the shop with me everyday since he was 8 weeks. A couple months ago my transmission went out and I got rides for a week or two. When we got our car back he tried the scraming thing for about a week he liked riding closer to me I guess, anyhow I ignored him and he got over it. Now if he would not try to hang out the window like a giant dog...... |

| Wow I think I would go crazy too with the screaming. I wonder half of the time what they are thinking in their little head that made them act the way they do and that is what makes them funny sometimes My yorkie boy doesn't scream in the car but pukes nearly each time he travels in the car.It is gross when you are unprepared for it.The thing is, I don't think he'd puke if he would stay still in the car. From the minute he gets in to the car, he'd move and move and doesn't stop moving and then he pukes.

| miko is like this as well :( i've posted on here in the past about miko having absolute panic attacks in the car. we're concerned for her safety! she barks and screams and pants until we think her tongue is going to fall out of her mouth. after reading this thread, it seems that this behavior isn't so uncommon. i hope you guys make up soon. |

| That sounds like a extremely stressful situation. You might want to try taking "the car screetcher" lol on short rides and getting frozen yogurt ( vanilla) give a lick or two and then you eat the rest... I know that yogurt isn't the best, but this worked for Lola.
