Obedience classes are well worth the time and money if you can do it. The only dog we ever trained via classes was our best. There is something about that arena that is priceless. These little guys are natural hunters and will run for the dickens if given a chance. Best of luck to you!

I had this same problem with Murphy until about three weeks ago. When I took him in my backyard (fenced) to release some of that puppy energy, I could not get him back into the house. The more I chased him the more fun he was having. How frustrating!! He is in puppy kindergarten and is still working on stay, but he finally learned come.
Find a treat that your puppy loves!!! Break it into small pieces. Show him the treat and say come. When he comes reward him for 20 seconds while saying good come. Do this every time you say come. The treat and praise needs to be the happiest of events.
This worked for Murphy. He loves string cheese. He only gets this when I say come. While I was praising I also said the word cheese. In the begining I would have to say come and get some cheese. Now three weeks later I will walk in the house and say come. Murphy comes in the house and will sit by the refrigerator while I get him a little piece of cheese. The big test came last week when I opened my front door to let someone in, Murphy went on my front porch. I said, "Come get some cheese." He followed me in the house.

OMG!! A story in which the humor is TRULY not seen until after the fact! So happy that ended well. I would have passed out and hubby would have had to choose whether to get Wizzar or pick me up!

How funny! That's so true! I feel like such an idiot sometimes after Max has grabbed and eaten something important (usually paper), and I give him a treat for coming to me so I can go and pick up the remnants. Sometimes, I can even tape the pieces trogether!

Terriers love to play chase - it's so annoying!

Naaaah, you only look like an idiot to non-Yorkie owners when you do that. We KNOW that's the right way.

The one thing you do NOT want to do is chase her. She will think it is a game. As hard as it is to do, when she runs, call her name in a voice you know will get her attention, then turn and run the other way. She wiull then chase you. That is what I was taught in an obedience class and it works well.

I can sympathise with you though..when my Heidi was younger she was just terrible for running off..i would let her off when i thought it was safe and there were no other dogs or people around..then she would spot someone far in the distance and be gone in a second! she was such a tearaway and used to give me heart attacks! she got alot better as she got older and would seldom stray far from me.

Chewy ran away from me for a year in the house... it was so frustrating...Good thing he is cute! But when he turned a year it was like a light bulb went off... if I use a stren voice he stops in his tracks! he just needed to grow up a little... I don't trust him off leash out side...
