| breathing puppy Sorry...yet another question (not used to this whole puppy thing). Bubba (our five month old yorkie) breathes REALLY funny. It's hard to describe. It's really fast and it makes a snorting sound. It sounds like he could be trying to throw up but can't. I thought he was choking so I went over to open his mouth to see what was in his mouth and there wasn't anything. Tyke breathes like but only occasionally and it's not even once a week. Bubba did this last night for some time...and he's doing it now. His whole body heaves when he does it. Is it a normal puppy thing or is doggie asthma or what it is? I'm reaaaaally paranoid Tyke is still hopping around on three legs He gets his surgery for his ligament tear on the 24th....however we are taking him to a specialist about 45 minutes away who specializes in orthopedic surgery specifically for small dogs. If we can get Tyke in to see him before too long we'll take him there but if we have to wait a month and pay 1000 dollars then he'll just get it done at the vet on the 24th. --Melissa

| Sounds like your Bubba needs an evaluation and soon, by your vet to rule out collapsing trachea. I have forgotten how old Bubba is, but if symptoms start as a puppy and last for long periods of time with each episode, the condition needs to be managed ASAP to prevent heart and lung problems. Of course, there are other diseases/problems that cause the sounds I think you are describing, but I would still have Bubba checked by a really good vet. Good Luck with your babies. |

| Also check with your vet to see if it is "Reverse Sneezing". |

| I'm having the same problem with Linus. Sometimes when he gets excited or just when he's sitting down, he will start with this horrible snorting, hacking thing that sounds like emphysema or something like that. He used to do it very rarely and I just chocked it up to being reverse sneezing. Now it seems like he's doing it more often and louder. Any suggestions on what it could be???

| breathing issues I have read about reverse breathing and trachea collapse but neither of mine has ever had breathing problems. Do you use a collar leash? I read that could cause trachea collapse and should not be used. The other thought would be allergies. At any rate I suggest a trip to the vet, it doesn't sound normal to me. |

| i would take your puppy in right away. My puppy was doing the same thing and is now in the intensive care unit and they think that he will not make. Dont take these things lightly because you may regret it later. |

| i should have said what he ended up having. it was kennelcough pneumonia.. it sounds like a cough or like they have something stuck in their throat. The only reason i knew something was funny was because he would cough. He showed no other symptoms at all. He was playful,he was eating and you would have never known. We took him to the vet the first time and they said that he had a mild case of either kennel cough or something upper respiratory and gave us amoxicilin and a week later his cough was worse..then we took him in again and they wanted to do a treachial wash but didnt have time that day.. a day 1/2 later they got him in and after his wash he went down hill from there. he could breathe and had to be taken to the er and has been there ever since. his in a incubator with a feeding tube and it is the worse thing ive had to deal with seeing your baby suffering like he is. Please be cautious and just take your baby in to get check out. you wouldnt want this to happen to your pup. |

| Sick puppy too Quote:
I am going through the same thing with my little yorkie. He sounds like he is coughing AND breathing through his nose very fast and hard. He even does this when he is sleeping. He is tiny, 2.5 lbs. and I am very worried. I have taken him to the vet 7 times. They just keep prescribing meds. and with his little liver it worries me. I am at a loss as well. | |
