| Pup at home while I work, need advice. hi. i'm a new mom to my 4 month old yorkie Rambo. he's very smart and is starting to get the concept of crate training (after he peed in my bed) and potty training. he still has accidents which is to be expected. my question is, I live in a two bedroom apartment, I block off the hall way to the bedrooms and let him have full run of the kitchen, living room, dining room and outside patio. Is that too much area for such a tiny pup? My fellow animal lovers say I need to keep him in either a larger crate (he sleeps in a small taxi crate) or block off a smaller area.. I am unsure what is best. Rambo leaves poo and pee that I find when I get home, he hasn't figure out to go out on the patio to do his biz when I am not there... I work from 745a-5ish p and i get home after the gym after 6.. It would totally suck to leave him in a crate all day! right?? |

| You are giving way too much space. He needs to be in a crate, an xpen or a small area gated off. I personally dont believe in keeping a dog in a crate that long but that is what you need to do if you are going to outside train him. What I would do is peepad train him and keep him in an xpen or a small gated area.

| Training Hi there! My Meka is 5 mo's... I work from 7:30 to 4:30 and she stays home in her "area" until I get home. Its a small area in my washroom with her bed, a pee pad and her water bowl... They say that you should never allow your pup to have the "run" of the house. Infact, until they are fully housebroken you should always keep your pup confined to 1 area, "their" area... Hope it helps

| I'd give him a lot less space to run in.

| perfect. i will put him in the kitchen, its big enought for him to walk about. he's definitely going to freak out on me and bark lots! He is crate training at night too and boy does that little 3 pound pooch bark! 10-15 mins straight; I've learned to use ear plugs so I don't feel so bad for making him sleep in his own bed! thanks you all! I feel like such a dork for letting him run the house. its always an adventure to find little surprises on the white carpet!! ah! |

| LiL Moe has been crate trained from being small, and Pippy since I have gotten her, this serves many functions in the life of the Yorkie and the Yorkie owner, first of all as I have recently found out ...it keeps the baby Safe....I unfortunately codoned off an area for them as I knew I'd be gone longer than normal.....they escaped and now Moes paying for my mistake.Secondly...a dog is naturally a den animal..if you crate trin your dog it will have its own "get away" area....a place to hide when afraid, and a place to stay out of trouble when unattended. Also Crates provide a good boundary of yours and mine...whats thiers is in the crate..whats not they soon learn to leave alone...this is mostly durring the chewing puppy stages.Crate training is great durring potty training time.....as normally and naturally a dog will not soil thier sleeping area..I say normally as some rescue dogs may due to thier previious neglect.Moe and Pippy BOTH know that When mommy goes to work they go in the crate..to the point now they put themselves away if they see me put my uniform on....so many different reasons for how a crate trained dog is not only happy, but also healthy and easier to deal with. They will all bark, cry or complain to start about using the crate..but I found a cover over the top settles that down.

| I posed a similar question about a month ago.... What I learned from the wise folks here, is that that many hours is too long to keep ones that little in a crate. I also live in a 2 BR apartment. I have a small, galley style kitchen that I close off with a baby gate. In the kitchen she has her pee pad (IN a pad holder that protects the floor and secures it -- I got it at petsmart - it was $24.99 though)... and I leave a radio on during the day with plenty of toys, etc... Also in the kitchen I have her crate, a water bowl, dry kibble. So far it's working. From everything I have read, not "giving" them the chance to have accidents (i.e. keeping them in a controlled area for a while and then they kind of "earn" privilidge to other areas of the house), is the best way to train these little guys. Good luck!
