| ![]() I'm so sorry about your sick furbaby . When I brought Cookie home he had Kennel Cough and it took over a month to get over it . They gave us amoxcilin then a stronger medicine. His cough got much worse and he did not eat at all,we fed with syringe for over a month. He was cured thank God. I know how quickly we get attached to these little dogs. It's a very hard decision to get another pup. I have never heard of a trachea wash? My vet never even mentioned this as an option when we kept returning with Cookie getting sicker. Did you ask your vet exactly what they do in a trachea wash? Genie |

| ![]() I found this about TraTracheal Wash Question: Hi. I'm a subscriber and wrote to you a couple of days ago regarding bronchitis in my dog Noah. He is still breathing shallow and rapid. On Thursday the vet changed his antibotic and put him on presodone. If this doesn't work they may want to do a trachael wash. Can you tell me what this procedure consists of? Will he have to be put under to do the test? What are the risks? Will he have to spend the night? If hospitalized, how long? Is a tube put down his throat or what? Thanks again for your help. Your articles are always extremely informative. Brenda Answer: Brenda- There are several techniques for doing tracheal wash procedures. It is possible to do a transtracheal wash in a reasonably calm patient using a sedative or sedative/narcotic combination, in many instances. In this procedure a needle is placed into the trachea and a catheter threaded through it or over it (depending on the catheter type) and down into the lung region of the trachea. Saline is flushed into the trachea and then sucked back into the syringe for examination. This technique works better in big dogs. Another option is to anesthetize the patient and pass a sterile endotracheal tube into the trachea. A catheter is then passed through this tube and down the trachea. Saline is flushed into the trachea and then sucked back into the syringe. This works better for small dogs and cats. Even though it sounds pretty bad to flush fluid into the lungs the saline is absorbed rapidly if it is not recovered and this procedure is very safe. Anesthetic risk is always a worry but anesthetic problems are rare. We send our patients home the same day and sometimes do this as an office visit. Hope this helps. cheal Wash: |

| ![]() I am so sorry to hear about your puppy. I have not heard of a tracheal wash, but it definitely sounds like that may have affected his condition. Hope this helps...I got my puppy and he started with a runny nose and then it went into a cough. I took him to an emergency vet as soon as I noticed it and they took xrays of his lungs and said they looked clear, but didn't sound clear at all. They diagnosed him with Kennel Cough/Pneumonia and he was only 10 wks old at the time. They kept him overnight on IV and antibiotics, but he was lethargic and not eating really well. The next day we picked him up and immediately brought him to our vet and they kept him for 3 more days and said he seemed to be improving so we brought him home with antibiotics (Cefa-Drops). Well when I brought him home he was hyper and eating well so I thought we were out of the woods. However, 3 days later he woke up and wouldn't even sit up. He would just lay there, wouldn't eat or drink. So then I took him to the vet our breeder used b/c there would be no cost and that way he could stay on the antibiotics as long as possible. I brought him there that day we noticed he got worse and they kept him for 4 days and sent us home with Chloro-something (not sure what it was, but it helped). He was only on that for 7 days and was still coughing, but eating and drinking and playing like a normal puppy. So then I took him back to my vet to check him and she said that his lungs finally sound clear, but he had some labored breathing still. Now he has been on Clavamox and Antirobe Aquadrops since last Thursday (June 9). He also got a little ear infection, but I think that was separate and from his bath. Anyway, the medicine seems to be working, but he still has his coughing episodes and his nose is still a bit runny sometimes. My vet said that puppies that small that come down with pneumonia should be on antibiotics for at least 5-6 wks. So far it's been almost a month on antibiotics. The thing is, he acts like nothing's wrong with him. He eats great and plays all day, but I just hate to hear the cough. I know exactly what you are going through having to wait and hear everyday how his condition is. I was so depressed for that whole week just wondering what was going to happen. It was terrible and I really did not know what to do. I thank God everyday that I have him home and he is well and I hope the same will happen for you. I am praying for your puppy and really hopes he starts to show improvement. Please keep us updated.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | ![]() OMG that poor angel...I'm VERY SORRY for your little puppy & you....that's very sad....I'm posting the Rainbow Bridge Poem for you....it's a beautiful poem and I hope it helps you during this time... Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... Author unknown... |
