I have never pulled the hair out of my dogs ears, and have never had a problem. If one did become prone to infections, then I would start doing it. Meanwhile, I go by the theory, "if it's not broke, don't fix it". It seems like a cruel thing to do if it is unnecessary.

Me too! After I would take Cassie to the groomer she wouldn't let me touch her ears for days! Whenever I tried pulling the hair out myself, she would act like it hurt plenty. I remember the vet saying that after a while it stops hurting them because the roots got more shallow and thin but I said "no more!" I have the groomer clip them on her and Adie both now. I check all three dogs from head to toe every day and have never had a bit of trouble.

So if I am reading this correctly when you look into their ear it should be clear of hair? So that it allows the canel to breathe? Do you all clean their ears with anything specific or just leave them alone except for removing the hair??

I ordered an ear powder to help with pulling the hair out and then I follow up with an ear cleaner. Both ordered from Pet edge and recommended from a grooming dvd I ordered. One of my yorkies, that is suppose to be a red legged yorkie, does not get hair in his ears but my other yorkie has a lot of hair that needs to be pulled. I do this about once every six weeks when I cut their hair.

I took Bella to the vest last night and had them remove the hair from the inside of her ears, I would have never thought to do this until I read this thread. So thank you to everyone who gave their advice and ideas on the removal of ear hair...I learn something new everyday here!

I would use something like Bag Balm rather than Vaseline. It is available in most pharmacies. It was originally used to keep cows' udders soft. I don't believe their is an antibiotic in it, but it works wonders on most scrapes and and cuts.
