hair in the ear Hi, Does someone have good suggestions on how to clean the hair inside yorkie's ears? I tried to scissor cut the hair as much as I can while bending the ears, but my puppies seemed to be very sensitive to the scissor inside the ears. I read information about pulling the hair off with hand or twizzer, is that a better way? So I tried to pull off once with my hand, the puppy yelped and groaned! (Maybe this was not a good idea either.) Also, am I supposed to pull out (cut off) all the long hairs I see? HELP! |
The hairs that need to be pulled are the long ones growing out of the ear canal. The reason they are pulled is to allow the ear cana to breath and dry out easier. This lessons the chances for ear infections. Don't try to pull all of the hair at one time. just take a few strands. I don't have fingernails, so I can use my fingers. You may have to use forceps. Either way it should be pulled not cut (cutting just leaves the hairs down in the ears!) and you should do only a few strands at a time. |
You can use the clamps (forget what they are called) that clamp down and lock together. Twist and pull the hair out. Or, use your fingers. It isnt a comfortable thing for them, and your baby might squirm and yelp, but it needs to be done. |
it is really quite easy. you can just use your fingers and pull a few out at a time.. i dont' think layla even knows when it is happening.. she jsut sits there... i bought some powder from petedge which helps oyu get a good grip on the hairs. I just learned by watching the groomer do it and she basically said just pull :) |

I use a good pair of tweezers and just pull out the hair in the ear canal several strands at a time. Doesn't bother my two a bit:) |
I just grab a few strands with my fingers and pull. I was so scared so I asked my breeder to show me how she does it and she said it's simple and the girls won't cry. So when we got home I tried and they did great!!! Didn't even phase them. I know it's better for them because it reduces infection. |
Bella doeant have much hair in the ears so I dont do anything with them....so far so good! It seems like it would be painful for the little fur butts but many say it is not. Im hoping Diggy has the same ears as Bella! |
my babys groomer does it when J.C. gets his "spa day" every 8-10 weeks. do i need to do it in between appointments?:confused: :aimeeyork |
Out of my four, I only need to pull the hair on one, it's so much thicker. I just use my thumb and pointer finger to pull a few strands at a time. Doesn't seem to bother her at all. |
I let the groomer take care of it. I'm to nervous to pull it myself, and neither of mine have that much hair in their ears. |

pulling hair out of the ears Hi, thanks so much for everyone's help. What great help you all were! I did it, although I haven't completed the job yet. Since I don't have a pair of hemostats, so I gave a try with my tweezers. My bigger (4 month 3 week) girl did better, although sometime she seemed to be bothered by it. I could tell she wasn't terribly hurt or anything. My smaller one (4 month 1 week) did just fine, but she yelped a couple times. She has always been the complainer anyway (bathing, teeth brushing, brushing, etc.). I now know I just need to pull the hair growing out of the ear canal, and I only need to worry about it if it seems thick. Like I said, I am not done yet, but I figured it out with all your help. I will finish the work slowly. My girls will soon get more used to me doing this, I believe. Thanks again. |
When Libby was spayed last week, I asked them to pull the hair out of her ears while she was under, and they did. She had so much hair in her ears and now that they're cleaned out, it should be easier to keep up with it. Maddie has had very little hair in her ears. It's funny what a difference there is in my two. |
off subject :eek: I know this is not the correct subject, but has anyone ever had their yorkie's hair trimmed so short, the groomer I think nicked him very close to his anus and his belly. It's driving him crazy!! Skippy is allergic to antibiotic ointment, so we are just trying to keep him from licking these areas so he doesn't make himself more sore there. anyone think vaseline would be okay? I haven't used anything yet.:confused: |
