| Help...DEXTER bit a Toad! He seems okay but... my little baby just bit a toad! We went out for a potty break, and before I knew what was what I saw this fat body sticking out of his mouth! He took off with it, and I gave chase for about five seconds. When he finally dropped it, he had it in it mouth for almost 30 seconds. I just read some stuff about a large poisonous toad in Florida that can be harmful to dogs and cats. I live in Maryland, so I'm not sure if that species of toad lives here. Also I did what others recommended and washed his mouth with copious amounts of water. After the incident, I could tell the whole experience was horrible (bad tasting) for him. But he seems fine now. I'm just wondering what anyone elses experiences have been with toads in or around the Maryland area??? And even though he seems totally fine, how long till I'll be in the clear? Thanks, dexter's mom Last edited by i luv dexter; 08-10-2007 at 05:21 PM. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | It's called the BUFO Toad - http://www.floridagardener.com/critters/BufoMarinus.htm When Chanel first picked a Toad and dropped it - I called my ER Vet right away and they assured me in Texas our toads aren't toxic - so it depends on WHERE YOU LIVE - The Bufo only lives in certain areas - You did the best thing flushing his mouth out - Did the toad run off ? Do you remember what it looked like ? Foaming at the mouth and excessive drooling are signs they touched one- toads excrete a bitter substance & most of the time won't hurt your pet - but a Bufo can kill a dog. If you don't live in an area that has the Bufo then hopefully he'll be ok Edited to add - IF you want to be really safe - call the ER vet and ask if any dogs have been treated for Toad Poisoning recently - they'll tell you if you need to worry or not

| I live in Virginia, and I know they put off some stuff because my yorkie had foam the first time he picked one up like that. I took him in with the kitchen water hose and doused him. but these toads are everywhere, I think we would have heard if the one's in VA and MD were deadly or not. Just nasty. ugh |

| I read that article looking to see if it's in Maryland and I don't know. Did anyone else find a reference to specific states it's been found in?? I know this is off topic (sorry) but this phrase struck me.. "Giant Toads can be removed and disposed of humanely (as recommended by the IFAS Animal Use Approval Committee) by placing them in a plastic container (or bag) in the freezer for three days and then burying the carcasses." What???

| Thanks guys. My sister and I freaked out. She threw it in the trash, but my biology background told me maybe we should keep it (just in case). But we had already tossed it in the dumpster. So I can't really get a second look at it.Yeah, I don't think there are any of that Bufo species out here, now that I've read some more, but I'd rather be more cautious than not. After I washed out his mouth, he was running around, biting ankles as usual. If anything unusual happens I'll call my vet. Hopefully, my crazy baby won't do that again. Toads are icky! Guess Dexter knows that now...LOL! |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | My guess is if he sees another he'll go after it with the same gusto - my girls have been toad hunting since we move into this house and the only one who ever gets close enough to try to pick one up is Chanel - and she's the one who gave me the heart attack just like you just had LOL She gets so excited she forgets they taste NASTY |
