| How do you know if a Yorkie is overweight? I do not care if he grows to be outside of the standard. That is absolutely fine with me. My concern is for his health. How do you know if a dog/puppy is overweight? Is there a formula? Like height and length compared to weight? Chest measurements compared to height? Is there a different rule for puppies as opposed to fully grown dogs?

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | I go by the RIB feel - since I can't feel Chanels Ribs anymore I'm thinkin Jenny Craig ...Think she can get a commercial contract ??? I don't think there's a standard measurement to tell - but you should feel the outline of the rib cage - not BONES - but at least be able to 'feel' them I don't feel Chanels. LOL my little chubbo...I mean.... Miss Voluptious |

LOL - tell him to chew something on a really yummy page....and ya - the Rib Feel is a good gage - no ribs means an excess pound or 2 .... it seems the frailer built dogs don't have this problem - but Chanel's always been a sturdy citizen and my vet had even told me when she was a puppy to watch her weight. Her last vet visit they SAID she was fine - but I'm thinking she can lose a pound maybe 2 | |

| TJ is 6.8 lbs. and Roxy is 5.2 lbs. I always thought that TJ was my little piggy BUT when I had them both at the Vet Specialist for Roxy's LP check up and such...the Doctor told me that TJ is actually fine, he is muscular and fit - like a football (hahaha) ...now, Roxy on the other hand...the Doctor told me that she has a lot of fat flab over her ribs, even though I can feel her ribs, I can also grab a HUGE handful of flab. So, I need to exercise Roxy more... And Cuddles, she is 3.5 lbs and desperately needs to gain some weight, you can feel every bone in her body (gross) - even her hip bones. But, she is eating quite well now, so I hope she can put some muscle on top of her little bones... So, you never know |

| That's good to know. I don't feel any flab and the boy is constantly either moving or sleeping. It's amazing how they each have their own ideal weight and weight issues/non-issues.

| i also make sure i can feel Layla's ribs. When she is wet i make sure i can see her "hips" and that they do in fact go in as opposed to her body being straight down her and having no indent where the hips are. Also when you are looking at him standing up, you should see where his ribs end.. the line that goes from his ribs to his belly should go upwards. i hope that all made sense |

| Thanks! Uh..yea...it was a little confusing, but I think I figured it out. I'll check the next time he has a bath. Poor little Gizmo, I think I made him paranoid! He has never messed with the scales and right after I started this thread, he wouldn't leave them alone! lol (please ignore the dust on the scales )

I Love My Lil' Punkin's Donating Member | I think my little Tator Tot is over weight (seriously) - she eats like a pig. And I am not being over dramatic here, I really think she is too chubby for her size. Her head is in that food bowl ALL DAY LONG! When she is wet, she looks like a little baby PIG with a golf ball sized head. Her stomach is just HUGE and she feels SO SOLID. She's so small in size - that I really do think that she needs to lose weight. Just too chubby and it can't be a good thing with her being so small. It's hard to tell in pics because of all of her THICK hair...but she really is a CHUNK. Stedman on the other hand, needs desperately to GAIN weight. I CAN feel his spine/ribs/hip bones - and I HATE IT! He just DOES NOT eat like she does...never has

| Cody (15lb teapot) is getting chunky too. I had to pull him off of all the Merricks canned food. He was being a PIG and eating his and Izzy's food. His belly was starting to get round. I have cut him back to 1 cup of dry food (Canidae and Merricks Granny Pot Pie mixed). He doesn't go hungry and he is starting to slim down a bit.

| If I can feel his backbone/spine, could he be underweight then? Dang it, all this fur makes it tough to tell.

| Great question! I've wondered the same thing about Susanah. I can barely feel her ribs and she doesn't 'shrink' at all when she gets wet.
