I'm pee pad training right now and it's pretty tough. The first couple of days weren't so great. I tried putting him on the pad, but he wouldn't stay on it and peed where he thought was a good spot. So I watched where he would go each time, and put the pad there. So far he's only had 1 accident since Tuesday. So I HOPE it's working out. That one accident was my fault because I wasn't watching him. He peed on my bf's bag! Also each and every time he did go on the pad, I praised him like crazy! Treats, pets, "good boys", the works. Being on vacation for a couple of weeks also helps during the early stages. Hope that helped you out a little.

I also read that toy dogs are hard to potty train and may have accidents throughout their lives.

What does everyone think is a good idea? Crate training or pee pad training?

I have to say, I HIGHLY recommend getting through crate training no matter how hard it is. They say within a month they will be trained if you use that method. I never did bc I couldnt BEAR my pups being locked up ... BUT now I WISH I did... they are 2 almost and have accidents in the house pretty much DAILY! soooooo FRUSTRATING! I call them accidents... but in all honesty, they just pee where they please! So if you can, try to crate train... it will be WAY better for your house!

As a trainer, I highly recommend it. And that doesn't mean that you have to deal w/ the problems that you will no doubt encounter when they're inside the crate. Most puppies/dogs have to be taught just as much manners INSIDE the crate as they are taught OUTSIDE of it.

No barking/digging/scratching/howling/peeing/pooping.....destruction and discontent of any kind inside the crate or out and about in a building of any kind.

Anyway, I just saw a post above mine advising it and thought I'd jump in w/ my 2 c.

When we first brought him home, and he went pee for the first couple of times, he actually went on the pad by himself. Then he started to have accidents for some reason. He once peed on my lap out of the blue. Recently we started praising him for going on the pad and giving him treats and it kind of seems like it might be getting through to him. I guess we'll continue and hopefully he'll start getting better soon.

Hmm, I can understand not wanting your little puppy locked up. I don't either. The thing with crate training is, wouldn't it be super hard to take them out every 3 hours? And what would I do through the night? Would I still have to let him out every 3 hours at night time?
No accidents does sound pretty tempting.

So if I did crate training, does that mean getting rid of puppy pads for good? It also gets to be about -20 celsius here sometimes in the winter. I'm not sure he could go out when it's that cold. Can he be both crate and pad trained? Or does anyone have a dog who is fully pad trained and doesn't have accidents?

I would try feeding the Innova alone and not mixed at this point. If the bloody stools exist after he has been eating Innova alone, time for another switch. Small dogs tend to have more sensitive stomachs.....I wouldn't worry, this is very normal. I tried a couple of foods before I hit on Innova! I now have a litter of puppies. Two little boys! They will started on Innova as soon as they are weaned. These puppies will be sold, however, I will be sending a weeks worth of food with them to their new homes!! i have crate trained all of my dogs. maggie is 10 months old and RARELY in her crate. i find that crate training them IS easier and they learn to hold it for longer periods of time once they are used to it. and it really doesn't take long for them to catch on. they recommend every 3 hours so that the dog is going outside often enough to make it to outside...then they learn that outside is where they potty, not inside. and if you stick to a schedule like every 3 hours, they get comfortable and KNOW that you are going to take them out...that they don't need to freak out and pee...that if they just hold it a little, that you are going to take them out. dogs are creatures of habit...you set the habit, they will follow it. they will adapt to it. so find a schedule that works for both of you, stick to it, and before you know it, you will not be going out every 3 hours, as the dog will learn to hold it and will also trust that you will be taking him out soon.

i also highly recommend the crate training. plus it makes it a lot easier if they are used to their crate, in case you ever do have to crate them for some other reason...like when they get spayed/neutered, travel, are sick, injured, or even at the groomer. maggie has come to LOVE her crate. it is her special "place" that no one else is allowed to be in or near LOL

In my experience it has to be one or the other. Not both.

Pad training/litter box training takes due diligence and can be done while using crate training as a means of control until it is time to go, just have no pads or bedding in there (except perhaps a white towel, if you notice it's being pottied on outside of the schedule you're trying to set, then your pup doesn't get any bedding at all.). And instead of taking your puppy outside, you take them to the pads, which I usually advise...especially for boys...is that you place your pee pads inside a large size cat litter box so he/she has to make an effort to get into the box before eliminating thereby eliminating accidents on the edges of the pads and creating a mess on your floor. Some males will get half in and half out before going pee. If that happens, you can raise the litter pan just another half inch off the ground to ensure they get all the way in.

There are plenty of ways to get done what you'd like to get done.
