When you put nail polish on the bites it suffocates the chigger and they die.
They burrow in, biting.

When I was little and played in the sand in SC I used to get bites and mom would always put nail polish on.

Hope this info helps. I would be hesitant about treating your yard, though -
Our babies are so close to the ground they can be overcome by fumes and poisons, etc. really fast.

i am currious if your baby had a redish orange film on tummy when you noticed them? also is there a spray you can put on yorkies that will kill them and not hurt the dogs? I have two special little girls that i resuced and they both have this look around private area and inner legs. its freaking me out because i do not want anything to happen to them.

We had chiggers in NC. They are evil. The only thing that kept them off of us was Cutter Advanced. (NOT for the Dog!) If you dog uses Frontline or other treatment, then you might be getting them when you take the dog out. Grassy and areas with dried leaves are the worst.
We did find that when bitten, a dip in a chlorinated pool did provide some relief.
Seriously, when the first frost would hit, I would like to enjoy the thought of chiggers dying from the cold. They are seasonal and you won't find them in cooler climates.
They never seemed to bother Dinky, but DH and I were like chigger magnets.
