Meg, the first thing I think of when these babies act lethargic is HYPOGLYCEMIA!! So, haul out the white Karo, honey but my vet and experienced breeders prefer Nutrical or Nutristat. Just put some on your finger and see if he will lick it. IF NOT, squirt a dab UNDER his tongue and wait a few minutes and give more. If the blood sugar is not low, it still will not hurt your baby to have more sugar....same with human diabetics. If they need sugar and get none they will just go further down. If they have low levels then it will help and you will see results right away. In any case, you should talk with your vet for general info and to your breeder for info about the specific puppy. If Keeley does not perk up, don't wait and don't exercise him. Try to get the carbs in him before exercising. I have tube of NutriStat in every purse I own..LOL
Let us know hoy y'all are doing. Oh, BTW. Pale gums can mean shock, bleeding, or any number of other conditions. Check with your vet and they will show you how to check the gums. In humans, we check capillary refill in nail beds.. sorta the same thing, only different.

How old is your pup? I remember asking the same question when Cookie was a few months old. It seemed that he would sleep almost the whole day ,only waking up to walk over to the pee pad , getting a little water and would go back to sleep. I was freaking out. Cookie is now over a yr old and he' just a little bum lol. He sleeps at least 10 hrs at night and takes a bunch of long naps during the day. He has his play time (his little soccer ball) eats 3 meals a day....back to napping or sitting on my lap. My girl Mimi is hyper and only sleeps when you put her in her crate at night, or after she eats she takes a nap on her pillow.

I had the same problem. Biddy is 1/2 Jack Russell so you can imagine how hyper she is! Well, when I got Tucker he was so mellow and loved to sleep I got worried. He's almost 6 months now and we realize he's just really lazy! We weren't used to it!!

YOu can get Nutrical at most petshops (Petco, Petsmart, etc). I think it's sometimes called something else too? Maybe there are different brands, does anyone know what I'm talking about?

So glad to hear he's doing better. I wish my baby would stop eating! He's such a piggy around food, but I have noticed that he sleeps a lot more since it's gotten really hot outside.

I got my nutircal at the vet...they sell it...and it lasts a long time...I had to go buy a new one because mommy thought she was so smart letting Maximus chew on the cap while she brushed his hair..lol..little did I know he was chewing on the tubing and when I went to give him some it was pouring out of like 10 different little puncture holes..lol..STICKY

He is acting better, I ended up taking him outside for about 3 minutes, he loves being outside. When we came in he drank like crazy and finally ate. Then played a little and went back to bed.

I checked his eyes, they seem bright, and checked his gums, they are pink. I guess it could be the humidity and him just being young. Or maybe his bllod sugars were a little low... He hadn't eaten much for while.

Can anyone explain blood sugar levels and yorkies to me? Our breeder explained it but she went so fast and there was so much information that day that I'd love a little refresher.

The way it was explained to me was that Yorkies have an extremely high heart beat. Somewhere around 130 minute. They are small and use an enormous amount of food energy. It's similar to a hummingbird. Those little birds must eat every 15 minutes to keep their sugar level up. Have you ever been really, really hungry and grabbed something sweet? Immediately you felt better. Same goes with the little ones. They don't eat enough to keep their sugar levels up. When Maggie is on the picky side, I make sure she gets her Nutrical. Sometimes once a day, sometimes she doesn't get it at all. Depending on how well she ate that day. Some people even put a little Kayro syrup in their dog's water. I haven't tried that one yet.
