Okay I am freaking out now! I hope for no reason, but Keeley has been sleeping all morning and wont eat. :( He has had like 2 bites of food since last night! It is the same food he always eats and seems to like... He got up and played for a little while but then went back to sleep and won't really wake up. We have woken him up but he acts super tired and groggy, then goes right back to sleep the next chance he gets. Could there be something wrong? Or is this normal puppy behavior? |
puppy How old is your Yorkie? |
Up until Sully was about 5 months, he had really odd sleeping and eating habits. Especially eating...he'd eat sometimes and not others. And we had him on a strict feeding schedule! So I knew that if he was hungry, he'd have eaten. But he does fine now! Some lunches he doesn't eat much, but I know it's ok b/c he eats TONS for dinner, usually. But, that's just me and I'm no expert on any dog but Sully :) |

Look at his eyes to see if they look alert. If he is acting really groggy give him some nutrical to be on the safe side and keep checking him! |
He just may be really tired. Pups sleep alot. Just keep an eye one him. |
Yes, look at the eyes...if they are not bright and shiny, the sugar may be off. Your puppy should "wake up" if you encourage him. His head should not seem heavy. If so, you will have to do something you normally shouldn't do...put a little drop of honey or syrup under his tongue. I hope I don't catch any grief for this. It is like a diabetic needing a piece of candy to save their life some time. Always remember that Yorkie puppies need naps, never let them play as long as they want when they are small. |
Can't you also tell if something is not right if their gums aren't pink???? |

I hope your puppy is ok - I know it sure seems like things always happen on a weekend - but I would watch really close and see how he does throughout the day and take the other advise you got - the Nutracal is great and maybe try some boiled chicken/rice ? |
Exactly right.. gums should be bright pink with no grey-ish tint. I agree with Julz... my neighbor is a vet and says that the Karo/honey actually works faster than the Nutircal... I think you could run a little on this gums just to be sure... I would try the boiled chicken too.... Hopefully its just nothing, but you can never be too careful! Puppies do sleep alot, but you have to go on what he normally is like compared with today... if this is not usual behavior, then please be sure to keep a close eye! |
Thank you guys! I get so nervous, he is just so little and I'd hate for something to happen to him. I may freak out time to time, I hope you don't mind! ;) He is acting better, I ended up taking him outside for about 3 minutes, he loves being outside. When we came in he drank like crazy and finally ate. Then played a little and went back to bed. I checked his eyes, they seem bright, and checked his gums, they are pink. I guess it could be the humidity and him just being young. Or maybe his bllod sugars were a little low... He hadn't eaten much for while. Can anyone explain blood sugar levels and yorkies to me? Our breeder explained it but she went so fast and there was so much information that day that I'd love a little refresher. Thanks again everyone! :) |
Luig has been sleeping more than usual and also not eating as much and I thimk its cuz of the humidity! I hope he is feeling ok!! |
lethargic yorkie If your puppy is very small, I'd check his gums several times a day. Lacey got a tube of Nutrcal from the breeder because she was so tiny and I sure needed it. She got hypoglycemic at first, I could tell by how lethargic she was, so I started checking her gums often. Chloe never had that problem and she is my larger yorkie. So, it could be the heat but untreated low blood suger can lead to serious issues. Just put Nutracal or Karo on your finger and rub the gums with it. |
So if his gums do end up being a little grayish and he is lethargic it could be low blood sugar and a little karo syrup would help him? |
If you don't have nutrical, buy some and give him a little each day. They love it and you will feel better just giving it to him. |
