| Daily/Weekly Cleaning Regimen? As a new owner, what should I be doing on a daily/weekly/monthly basis to ensure the health & cleanliness of my dog? Pls. include anything from deworming him to baths! All suggestions welcome!

| Good thread-I would like suggestions too! I read on one thread about putting vaseline on their little feet to keep them soft. I had not heard that before. When do you do this? How do you keep it from going on your carpet?

| I can tell you from personal experience not to bathe too often. It's hard not to when they are little as they tend to get doggie smell for some reason. Try not to bathe any more than once every two to four weeks. Frequent bathing dries out the skin. Teeth should be brushed as often as you can, preferably daily. (I don't, but many do). Keep the nails trimmed. Do that with each bath or about every 4-6 weeks. Clean inside the ears at each bath. Don't forget to apply the flea and tick preventative a few days after the bath. What I find the easiest for all of the body stuff is simply to take Gracie to the groomer every 6-8 weeks. I give her a couple of baths at home in between but don't really bother with anything else other than the teeth and the "flea juice". I also brush Gracie every couple of days, usually her top knot gets done every day.

| Every DAY.. Layla gets her hair brushed, her teeth brushed, her face washed.. both first thing in the morning and at night... and sometimes she gets her bum washed should it become dirty when using the washroom Every WEEK (or so) Layla gets a bath... and every 3-4 days her nails get trimmed Every MONTH she gets trimmed.... however if during the week hair on her ears or around her eyes are long i trim them... same with around her bum! |

| I brush Lacy at least once a day - usually two times a day. I bathe her once a week using shampoo and conditioner. I just used a V05 hot oil treament last week and plan to start doing that regularly as well. I also brush her teeth at least once a week while I bathe her but I have started to do it more often during the week as well. I clean out her ears every one or two weeks. I have her nails trimmed about once a month as well as groomed about once a month. I just have her ears tipped, paws trimmed, and sanitary areas trimmed. I also give her her heartguard once a month and give her frontline once a month.

| Everyday we get brushed and our face washed and a general body wipe down as Mommy does not like doggie smells!!! LOL I use a extra gentle pet wipe for face ears body etc that i get at petsmart...he is only 3 ibs so one wipe does his body good!!!( a bath occurs instead if really needed but not more than once or twice a month so as not to dry out his skin) He went to the groomers for the first time about a month ago so we will be going back in a couple of weeks for teeth brushing, nails, anal glands etc.

| I try to brush him and wipe his eyes daily. I need to do his teeth daily as well but im not as good on that as I should be. Weekly I bleach down his crate and wash his blankies, toys, and food and water dish. He gets a bath and trim every 2-4 wks, it varies depending on if we have a special event he is going to or something. I usualy trim his nails at the same time I give him a bath.

| Great thread. I've had my girl one week now and I'm still not sure if I'm doing everything right...except the lovin', I know I'm getting that one right! I brush her every day (she has a puppy cut so she's pretty easy), I've brushed her teeth once so far but I plan to do it at least 3 X's each week, we go for at least a short walk most days, I clean off her eye boogers each day, and clean her bottom if it needs it (I think it might be time for a trim!). How do you clean their ears? I'm assuming you don't use q-tips and clean inside them. Do you just wipe them out w/ a wipe? I read somewhere that you're supposed to put cotton in their ears before giving them a bath, is this true? Do they get ear infections easily? Thanks for all of the great info!

| You may want to have a groomer or vet show you how to trim nails properly. It isn't hard, but it helps to have someone show you how to do it. Flea and tick realy varies on where you live and how often you are around other dogs. My kids go out quite a bit and never get fleas. We don't do the preventative. IF they get a flea then we will give it to them but it has happened once in the past 3 years. I don't see spending the 12+ per month on EACH dog to prevent fleas when they normally dont get them. However in some areas fleas are bad and its a necessity.
