| Neutering Advice Zizou is 4.5 months old right now and some people have been suggesting that I neuter him before 6 months or else he will develops "bad habits". I'd love to hear what YTers think about this - is that too early? Also, I'm a little nervous about him getting this procedure (I'm a first time small dog owner and my family's big dogs were not neutered or spayed until they were much older). So anything you can tell me about neutering will be helpful. Will he be very uncomfortable afterwards and for how long? He is also very small right now at 2lbs and I'm worried that he is too light to get anesthesia... Thanks in advance! |

| I've never had a male, but I've heard early spaying and neutering is more advantagous than disadvantagous (esp. neutering). My new kitten was spayed at 4months (breeder normally does it earlier - around 12 weeks or 2lbs). If I had a male, I'd neuter him as early as I could. Since yours is so little, I might wait for him to get just a little bigger though. The best thing is to ask your vet though and see what he is comfortable doing. I think the earlier the better (as early as you can be safe anyway).

| I'm glad I found this thread. I am trying to figure out the same thing, as I heard early neutering might help prevent bad behaviors, vs waiting and neutering after they've developed bad behaviors like marking. My Wickett is 16 weeks and 3.1 lbs so I'm also concerned about his size. What is the recovery for this procedure like? How long are they uncomfortable for? |
