NODAK's Fiancee

Well... Hello everyone..

I thought it was about time I made an appearance. I was just reading up on some of the threads that Chris (NODAK) has been a part of. The last response that I read was this message board is for helping, getting advice.. NOT BASHING. You guys have been bashing him since DAY 1 when he was asking questions politely.

Now I've read other posts as well on potty training and I know for a fact that there are other people who work jobs and leave their puppy in a crate while they are at work. And cannot come home for lunch or have someone let the puppy out. They even mentioned in the post that the puppy is in the crate for at least 10 hours at a time. And she put the puppy in the crate when she went to bed. That leaves just about the same amount of time that Chris and I have put Tanner in the crate. Mind you, this is not a permanent option and I am wanting to go with the x-pen or even play pen. Once Tanner is housebroken and out of the chewing stage he will have free reign of the house. It's just not a good idea right now, I'm sure Chris posted about the day he left the crate open on accident. (That is why).

Anyways.. The reason I'm posting this thread is for you to ask me questions and give me advice because you guys don't want to do it for Chris.

Apparently, you haven't seen the tons of advice he has received on here, so don't say that we don't want to give him advice.

If you thoroughly read the posts and threads that "Chris" has written on this site, you would understand why people have reacted the way that they have.

It seems as though Chris does not want this puppy (read his first few threads). Now I am new to this site too, and I have asked a number of questions myself...but have received no bashing and have felt nothing but support and kindness. When I replied (and other members) to one of "Chris's" threads, I suggested trying an x-pen...my suggestion was met with nothing but reasons for objection (which is fine b/c it was only meant as a suggestion). My perception of this was that "Chris" was adamant about not improving the situation for this poor puppy.

Before you start attacking the "members" of this website, perhaps you should read ALL the threads "Chris" has started before you make a generalization about everyone on here.

I'm going to play Devil's Advocate here. When I wanted to get a yorkie, my husband didn't, like of like NODAK (Chris) didn't. So, I can definately sympathize with what is going on there. Even though Chris may come off as a little crass, he would not be on this board asking questions if he didn't truly want to do a good job at raising the little guy. And, there HAS been some bashing going on by all parties involved, in my opinion. Maybe everyone could just start over.......

I am not attacking any of the members. I am just simply voicing what I've seen. Now Chris does like to be sarcastic and mean sometimes. That I do know.

I agree that would be great.
Tanner gets a lot of loving from the both of us. And I have always wanted a Yorkie since I've been a child, it's been a dream. I've always had Labs.
Tanner is not necessarily in the crate for 20 hours a day either. That is on the high end of the spectrum. But I will say that it is definitely hard for the both of us and I hate leaving Tanner in the crate. Trust me. Chris can vouch for me on this.

And Chris does love the puppy and want the best for him (we are not rehoming him). Like I've mentioned before we've thrown around the play pen and x-pen idea and we're definitely loving that.

Tanner is getting better about leaving his poop on the newspaper. Getting him to stay out of the kitty litter is a different story though. :) It's disgusting!

Txgurl06 06-21-2007 05:45 PM

im sorry it doesnt seem like he likes the puppy. I work from like 11 to 5

my mom gets off at 3:30

and skoshi gets free reign of the house. at first it was the master bathroom tho. and he never once used it in there.

i mean it just seems like he really doesnt like the puppy and doesnt want the responsibilty of having to spend money and take the time out to actually work with the puppy. Maybe you should read chris's previous posts. he says the puppy wont play with him and you try so hard to get him to. But the puppy can probably since that chris doesnt like him. from what it seems like he says hes trying to do this for you because you get sad and not actually for the puppy.

Small world! We have 1 lab and 2 yorkies. We love both breeds!

Someone mentioned the pee pad idea and Chris was concerned how much they cost. Pee pads (or wee wee pads or whatever you wanna call them) will probably work better than newspaper bc they have a scent that attracts the dog to it and makes it wanna pee on the pad. You can get them at Walmart for really cheap and they last for days. They will last as long as you want them to and since yorkies don't eliminate much, they can definately last 3-4 days per pad. What I did was when there was poop on there, I would just pick the poop up and flush it but still use the pad for subsequent uses. And they are seriously SO CHEAP at Walmart! So that would definately be something I would look into if I were you.

As far as the crating vs. x-pen. How big is the crate he's in? Is it wire? Plastic?

chachi 06-21-2007 05:46 PM

I think an xpen and pee pads are your best bet

Txgurl06 06-21-2007 05:46 PM

also most of them do eat poop. skoshi went through his phase of that and the kitty litter.

Txgurl06 06-21-2007 05:48 PM

as far as training the rest of your days outside of work should be nonstop attention on tanner and potty training him. ITS A LOT OF DEDICATION! i promise you that but you just gotta put in effort.

Well, not necessarily. I kept Hootie in a crate that was large enough that I could put a pee pad on one side and her bed and food on the other. It served the same purpose as an x-pen because it was bigger. If you don't wanna go with an x-pen, I would go with a larger wire crate that he has room to move around in and room to put a pee pad AWAY from his feeding and sleeping area.

I definitely spend every second with Tanner while I am home. I watch him like a hawk and it helps that He never lets me out of his sight, not even for a second. Potty training is going good though, I am not really having too much difficulties. I know it is a ton of work and I'm patient.

We have a large crate. One for a lab/golden retriever. I thought that would be better than a small one while we were gone for a while. My parents used to do the same thing while they were at work and me and my brother were at school (put our dog in the crate) So this is just how I raised to train a dog. I know you guys aren't the same on here..

Mitzis Mom 06-21-2007 05:59 PM

I have to admit I stopped reading Chris's posts after a while since it seamed as if he only wanted to have support for the rehoming idea. Also every suggestion of some of the really experienced YT members was bashed by him.

Was really p... me off was that he was always underlinig that IT is only a dog... well... dogs are pack animals and need a pack. So it would be only logically then to provide a dog a dog specific environment and to have IT crated that much is surely not a dog friendly solution...

Heidi, there are solutions for your situation and they were all suggested here.

In Germany we have a saying: As you call in the forrest it will call back...

red98vett 06-21-2007 06:01 PM

no offense but I think your boyfriend only comes here for reactions. I read a few posts and can tell he doesn't have any real emotion for dogs - and people here happen to be dog lovers. After the post he just did that got deleted - I would have to say he was way out of line and knew it. So - when you said he was being bashed - maybe it was because he provoked some people ?

I'd try to get him to stop calling your yorkie an 'it' ? that's a good step in the right direction.:) Dogs aren't 'it's' especially when the dog is living with you on a day to day basis....oh - and I hope you do take peoples advise...it sounds like the crate time is pretty excessive. I wouldn't normally post like this but he did ask about it and it sounded like he was proud of the 20 hours a DAY your yorkie was in a cage.

Good luck...I'd like to see you post more - but personally - I wouldn't post to Nodak again after some things I read.

Oh, that is a perfect size! There is really no point in getting an x-pen if your crate is the same size as an x-pen would be. I think when people were bashing the crate, they were thinking it was a tiny crate! I trained BOTH of my yorkies in a large crate with bed and food in one end and pee pad in the other, the same way you're doing with Tanner. I would really look into the pee (wee wee) pads. Do you keep water and food in there and toys?

not acording to Chris you run to him when he snaps his fingers and you put Tanner in a cage. I am sorry hun I really just want to say I feel sorry for you and Tanner. but if you like it so be it.

I do keep food, water, toys and a super soft bed in there. He loves that bed. When I first gave it to him, he fluffed it for about 5 minutes until it was just right. It was absolutely the funniest thing I'd seen in a while.
I think we're going to change to the pee pads. They seem better and at least his pee will be absorbed!

That is not true.. I am not like that at all. Chris is getting better with Tanner. I think he is just upset that Tanner didn't attach to him like he did to me.

Chris calls people "it" and he is not proud of crating Tanner that long. I know that for sure. We both feel bad.

Our first yorkie attached to me and not to my husband. That's why we got Hootie, who is completely obsessed with my husband!

Well.. I can tell you one solution that I will follow through with and that's rehoming.. I'm sure that once you guys have been attached to your yorkie puppy, you would never think of rehoming them. But there are others like I've said before that we have been tossing around.

What about just putting a gate up and keeping him in the bathroom? I know in my little house space is limited. Mine are older now so they are not confined. But when they were little, I didn't have the money for a cage and I had a baby gate so I kept them in there. Linoleum floor-easy to clean up accidents and they had some room to move around for the times when I had to work longer hours.

Yorkieluv 06-21-2007 06:41 PM

Hi Heidi,
If the crate training thing isn't working out, you could try keeping Tanner somewhere like a master bathroom. It should be a big enough area to keep a pee pad, water, bed, food, etc. And the floor is probably tile, so that would work out in case he has an accident. Good luck with the potty training thing!! I know it can be hard sometimes. But it sounds like you are being patient with him. Yorkies are such special little guys aren't they?
