| Yearly vaccines - are they 100% essential? Hey all, So I got a notice from my vet that Mickey and Remy are due for their yearly vaccines (DHLP+Parvo+Rabies+Corona). Mickey, who is 3, has had these done every year so far and Remy (one year old) had it done when he was a little puppy and at 6 months. I was wondering if it is 100% essential to do this every year for them. They are home dogs and never really go outside save for a few times in the backyard during the summer. Any info would be appreciated! |

| yeah..you want to get them..distember (pravo/corona) which is all in one vaccines is very important, if someone walks through the virus somewhere, which they cant see, and walk into your house and they dont have current vaccines they are at risk, if another dogs walks through your back yard and your let yours out and they arent up to date on vaccines, again they are at risk, and the pravo disease stays active for up to 3 years in an untreated area.. also rabies here is a law, you have to have rabies here.. |

| Yes, vaccinate! What if your dogs get away from you for any reason, say there is a fire or EMS comes to your house and leaves the door open while they try to save your life....You get my drift. Also, all boarding facilities that I know of require up to date vaccines, as do doggy day care, training classes, etc. PetsMart and PetCo have signs clearly posted that vaccinated and leashed pets are welcome. Short answer, in my opinion, it is a responsible pet owner who keeps their dog's vaccines up to date. Would you do any less for your fur kids?

| I agree, YES vaccinate!!! BUT... they only need certain vacines, petsmart and petco try and sell you a package deal and these dogs DO NOT need all the vaccines they include in there package. These are what my vet recommends: Rabies Parvovirus distemper hepatitis She does not believe they need these others: bordetella lepto lyme disease parainfluenza corona giardia |

| The only vax I give mine is the Rabies which is required by law. If they offered the 3 yrs rabies shot locally then I would give them that. I only get the DHLPP vax done every 3 yrs. In btwn I get titers done. I never get bordetella done, as my dogs never board anywhere and there are so many different strains of Kennel cough its not guaranteed to protect them. Plus KC isn't exactly deadly.

| Before you vaccinate again, I would really research it all out. I believe puppy shots are important but there is a big controversy over boosters. A lot of experts believe that dogs cannot become more immune with boosters. Ellie had her puppy shots but was not vaccinated for awhile after that. She did absolutely fine. She was exposed to a dog that was exposed to a dog that had parvo so we decided to update her shots to be safe. Well, she had a life threatening reaction to the Lepto most likely. Her old vet had never given her the Lepto vaccine. She will never be getting that one again. I have also learned recently that the Corona vaccine is not too effective and it is more of a worry for puppies so she won't get that one either. She will get the rabies vaccine but only because of the law. I will consider letting her get Distemper and Parvo every 2-3 years after titer tests have been done. Even the AVMA is switching vaccine recommendations to every 3 years on a couple of them. All those drugs are WAY to much on their systems.

| Well, everyone seems to have really strong opinions about this. But I don't think they are necessary. You may want to do titer tests to check for immunity...Over vaccination is a huge problem these days. Do some research on it and you'll be able to come up with your own conclusion. We want to keep our pets safe ultimately. One of the top vets in the nation is actually heading up research on annual vaccinations...Studies have shown that vaccines can last up to 7-10yrs. But titer testing is really important to see if your dogs are immune still....

| My vet did my boys vacs like this .. first distemper at 8weeks, 2nd & rabies by 3 months. Then 1 year later, distemper and rabies again, and now I have to go every 3 years for vacs, not every year. They do the round at 1 year in case the first puppy round did not take for whatever reason. Im afraid of over vaccinating my little guys. They do not get lyme vacs... which makes me nervous because ticks are bad in my area in the spring/summer. But the vet says that that vac is really hard on little dogs and as long as Im diligent with the frontline and checking for ticks they really dont need it since they are indoor dogs. Ive found 1 tick on each of them this year in March, which I thought was too early for frontline (i dont do it year round) but thats all the ticks ever so far!

| In my vets opinion...Bordatella is not a vaccine required for a dog that will not be at the groomer often or boarded. Corona is really no longer necessary in your vaccine protocols either. Lepto should never be given to a yorkie or toy dog unless it is going to be swimming with rats and beavers. |
