neutering at 4 months?

Jeremiah is getting sprayed on Friday. He is 6 months. IMO I think 4 months is too young and being sprayed when weighed 3.4lbs so too small. But that is just MO. Jeremiah about 6lbs.

No ice cream directly after the surgery keep her food bland and less than her normal portion that evening or you will have a terrible mess to clear up !

I did take Chico to get neutered and also had to have his rabies shot done at the same time due to the 4 month law where I live re. the rabies shot. I was very nervous but all went very well. My vet is very good especially with yorkies. I came in to pick him up in the afternoon and Chico was actually upfront with an assistant and playing like his normal self! I was very surprised but soo relieved to see my furbaby being his cute cuddly self soo soon!

I agree! Especially since the tube they use down the throat can be a bit much for their little trachea...I would wait until 6 months since she will be bigger then.

my furball is just about 5 months old.. weighs just about 5 lbs.. and hes marking already.. i really want to get him neutered asap..
do you think he might be ready??? im worried though because his testicles have not decended yet.. anyone relate?

WHAT IF A DOG HAS AN UNDESCENDED TESTICLE?

Undescended testicles have an increased tendency to grow tumors over descended testicles. They may also twist on their stalks and cause life-threatening inflammation. For these reasons, neutering is recommended for dogs with undescended testicles. This procedure is more complicated than a routine neuter; the missing testicle can be under the skin along the path it should have descended to the scrotum or it may be inside the abdomen. Some exploration may be needed to find it thus there is often an incision for each testicle. The retained testicle is sterile and under-developed. If there is one descended testicle, this one will be fertile but since retaining a testicle is a hereditary trait, it is important that the male dog not be bred before he is neutered.

My dog has retained testicles - what does this mean?

During fetal development or shortly after birth, the testicles will descend into the scrotal sac. In some dogs, likely due to a genetic predisposition, the testicles may not descend into the scrotal sac. These dogs are known as either unilateral (one testicle) or bilateral (both testicles) cryptorchids. The testicle may be retained in the abdomen or anywhere between the abdominal cavity and the external sac. Retained testicles do not usually produce sperm, but they will produce hormones, which can lead to any of the behavioral changes or medical problems previously discussed. In fact, some studies have shown that retained testicles may be more prone to developing cancer. At the very least, it would be extremely difficult to determine if a testicle which is located in the abdomen, begins to develop cancer, since it cannot be palpated. All dogs with retained testicles should be neutered for medical and behavioral reasons, and to ensure that this genetic abnormality is not perpetuated.

Hi Dena,
I am having the same issue with Tucker. My vet said to wait until he is about a year old and if it hasn't dropped by then, they'll have to operate. Our poor little guys!!

Dena: Ralphie is a week shy of 6 months..and my vet told me 4-6 is good timing.He just had his surgery..and would have been easy on him , even though he is 3.8 lbs, had it not ben for the hernia surgery they did as well.

I just had Charlie neutered and he was a day over four months. He did really well. I did it so early because 1. my county (kern county, CA) requires that every dog be "altered" and be vaccinated for rabies by 4 months. Even though a lot of people don't do it by then, it was important to me to get him licensed because we live in an apartment off a very busy street. and 2. a lot of things i read said if you can neuter the male before they reach sexual maturity you have a good chance of nipping a lot of bad behaviors male dogs can have before they start like: humping, agressiveness, marking, and territorialness with other male dogs.

Make the decision that you're comfortable with, and choose a vet who rutinely does very small dogs.
