| and there they go... does anyone's babies just stay by them when they go outside without a leash?!?!? i don't let them out without one but sometimes as i am going out the door they run out with me and then the race is on for me trying to catch them! why don't they just stay with you? theres a dog up the street, i think its a Maltese or a shih tzu. but it just stands in the FRONT yard and barks at everybody. then down the street theres a boxer that just sits in the yard and watches the cars go by. and neither have a leash on. how do they do it!!!???

| Some dogs just do better than others on that but I think they can be trained to go off leash and stay with you too. My Jewels has always did it. When Chachi was younger he would run off but when he got to a yearr and a half old he quit doing it and now we can have him off leash too. We only do it when we are right there and only out in front of our house

| You train them! I have a porch and I put a baby gate at the entrance. I open the dog and the dog goes running out (but can't go far, obviously because of the gate). I say, "NO" and I put him back at the door. I open the door again and if he runs out I put him back and say "NO". Soon enough he'll learn that he's not allowed to just rush out the door unless I say he can. Also, when walking, I start with the leash. The SECOND the dog starts tugging, I stop completely. When the leash goes slack, I start walking. Tugging again? I stop and wait till he stops tugging and the leash goes slack. Eventually he'll pick up on the fact that we're walking together, and he's not to be running off. Soon enough, you'll be able to go on leashless walks, but be sure that he responds when you call. To make sure he responds when you call, I first teach the name. Everytime he looks over and comes when I say the name, he gets praise/treat. Then I put him in an environment with a LOT of distractions. I teach him that he has to respond and come when I call. Then I place him in an environment with another dog (that he's friendly with), and when they're playing I call him and teach him to come as well (usually with treats). After awhile, he will learn that he needs to come when I call him regardless of the situation, and regardless if there are any treats. Hope that helps! You have to be in control of your dog and be the leader, and they will obey you. Right now the dog thinks HE'S the leader, that's why he goes running off and doesn't come when you call. | I have good luck with Maggie staying beside me... I never play with Maggie in our yard. Mostly she uses piddle pads, but she knows when she goes outside "in our yard" it's to good potty. I do pick her up, and carry her over to my neighbors, who also has a Yorkie, and that's where she plays. This has worked very well for me, since she doesn't associate our yard with playtime. I also won't let her walk to the mailbox, because I don't want her thinking she can run to the street. |
