How does my Yorkie behave this way?

Great thread Paul - you made me cry and laugh out loud through it.

I recognize so many things in it about my own yorkies.

Our breeder told us this:
Yorkies are called velcro dogs, and that's true, but they are also NOT a poodle - they won't do anything to please humans - they have their own way and you can take it or leave it, but if you have a yorkie in the house you might as well face the fact that the yorkie will decide for itself what is right and what's not. With other dogs you can "make them" mommys dog or daddys dog - yorkies will choose for themselves - in every way. And there is nothing you can do about it - so get used to it.
We thought she was a little "off" and too influenced by being a breeder, but she was right all the way.

When my husband and I come home at the same time, the dogs will shortly snif his legs, then jump and DANCE on their hind legs around me till I pick them up and let them lick me welcome home. I am usually soaking wet and have to go wash my face when they are done.
My husband gets jalous, but he has learned to live with it - and he has his "time" - when we are sitting on the couch or at the computer, the dogs will be with him, they will climb him/jump on him and MAKE him hold them so they can sleep against his chest. If I ask them "Don't you want to be here with mommy?", they will look up at me with this "You must be kidding me, what do you think?"-look.
When he has the night shift and comes home at 7am the dogs will wake up at 6.30, lick my face to wake me up and then run from me to the front door, giving me the "Is he coming home soon Mommy?"-look. And then he will get the big welcome treatment when he walks through the door

And then at night one of them will curl up next to my neck and the other will curl up on top of my husband. They change places several times during the night and in the morning they will both be close to my legs.

Regarding food, we have taught them that our food is our food, so when we eat they will jump on the couch, snif what we're having and then go on playing. They just have to know what we're getting, but they'll never beg or try to steal any.

Go figure...

I have no idea why they do what they do, but I respect that I have 2 living beings with their own mind in my house - and I think you have to as well

Cookie will eat anything that I am eating, regardless of what it tastes like, texture or composition. When she was a tiny baby, on the advice of her breeder, I got her some Pedigree Chum puppy food. It was finely chopped up already and I put a small amount in her tiny bowl. She sniffed it and looked at me as if to ask "what the hell is this rubbish?" So armed with the knoweledge that she only eats what has been in my mouth (she was more like a baby bird than dog) I pretended to eat some and did all the "mmmmm...this is yummy, Cooks" so without thinking, I got distracted and when I turned to repeat the fake eating, I actually put it in my mouth............ever tasted that stuff?? Spitting like my mouth was on fire, I told her "daddy ate some and it tastes lovely - c'mon, Cooks, your turn" she looked at me as if I had three heads and gave me a "kiss my a$$" look. Even these hide chewy sticks that are pieces of hide rolled up into a long stick, she won't touch them, so just for giggles, I put it in my mouth (okay, now you are getting worried about me I can tell) and as sure as the sun rises, she started to chew it - of all the dogs I have ever owned, even my late Great Dane, I have never had to do anything like this.

I am glad to say that she at least likes Bakers puppy mix and no, I have absolutely no idea what that tastes like - thank goodness!!!

To tell you the truth, I almost did the same thing. My 9 month old Yorkie Riley will eat anything a person is eating or puts in their mouth. Riley hates his heartworm pills! In the past, I have used HeartGuard with my other dogs that I don't have anymore and they loved it. They though it was a treat. When we got Riley, our vet put him on Tri-Heart plus. The pills are hard as a rock, unlike the soft heart guard. He wouldn't eat it, so I pretended to put the pill in my mouth. Well, it took a couple minutes for him to get interested, and during that time, I almost dropped the thing in my mouth! Hey, if I would've eaten it, I wouldn't have had to worry about heart worm! LOL! Well anyways, Riley eventually got interested and ate the stupid thing. LOL!

OMG - that would have been something if you did swallow the pill. Cooks has a suspicious nature and it is as if she has to smell me on whatever I give her, my kids think it is gross that I have to put things in my mouth first, but no matter how much I love her, I won't ever taste dog food or pills. One of my freinds actually swallowed a dog pill for fresh breath, she went green and thought she was going to die. The vet nurse couldn't stand for laughing - at least her husband noticed the difference, LOL.

I usually crush pills up in milk or if I can, I get the powder version.

Cookie sounds the opposite of my yorkie, Fancy. She always wants me to hold her and she wont hardly go to anyone else. She is really jealous of her puppies and she wants all the attention. She even stopped nursing them. I had to sit on the bed, and like always, she followed me. I had to stay on the bed while the puppies ate. She did this for 2 weeks until it was time to ween them. She isn't a very good mother. Is it normal or what?

I don't know about why Fancy does what she does - I think it all boils down to how she sees you, she obviously puts you first in her life and to the detrement of her babies. I was told once that all dogs see us humans as their 'responsibility' and to some extent, a puppy - in their eyes, we are the baby and they are the mom/dad.
I am having another baby soon, well in July hopefully - I am having a little girl and I haven't picked a name yet but one will come to me. She is coming from the same mom as Cookie did so she will have a baby sister.

Congratulations on your new family and I just know that they are loved.

My yorkie was supposed to be mylittle baby but at fisrt she ignore me. She would give everyone(EVERYONE) kisses except me. But now she loves me the most( OK equal to her daddy). Be patient,it will change. I think they are smart and do it on prupose as a way to dominate.
