I was having trouble getting Copper to let me comb him. I saw someplace where if you put a T-Shirt on them that they will calm down some. It seems to have helped a little. I bought a boar bristle (small) brush from Sally's Beauty Supply and Copper lets me use that pretty well. It doesn't get deep mats out, but at least gets him used to being combed...when he calms down a bit, I use the metal comb and brush on him. I found a small flea type comb with no handle that I use to get around his eyes...seems that the smallness of it doesn't scare him as much as the one with the handle (around his face).

| does it matter what type of coat they have when picking a comb or brush and also does how you have your yorkies coat cut matter when choosing a brush or comb. Macy has her puppy cut still but it seems her coat is more cottony. |

| I use a comb first then a brush on Chachis hair. His is more cottony. If I use the brush first I miss some of the matts.

| This is my first yorkie. I had 2 maltese in the past and never had much trouble using any kind of brush or comb. I used a metal comb and a slicker brush on both maltese dogs. However, this little ball of fire is so wiggly that I have a very hard time with the combs and wire brushes. That is why I decided to brush and brush with the boar bristle brush to just get him used to brushing...It really doesn't do much except smooth the hair, but does get some of the small mats. When I finally get him calm or when he goes to sleep soundly, I can usually use the comb and work on some of the bigger matts...I try to brush and comb very often so the bigger matts do not form. He is getting better...The T-shirt helps, too. I read about it in a book called "Little Dogs: Training your Pint-Sized Companion" More about the T-shirt and gentle massage to calm the little dogs down on this website: www.lindatellingtonjones.com

| Our breeder suggested a boar hair brush. We got the soft boar hair brush and it works great! Also, it promotes shine. We bought ours at Sally Beauty Supply and I bought one for myself, too. lol...it really does make my hair shinier, too! |

| I have 3 yorkies and 2 of them are silky so they don't tangle as much so I use a pinhead brush and it make it really silky smooth. The third one is cottony an d she tangles all the time,I use a metal comb to get to all the knots.

| I used a boar hair brush on the pups to begin with, they HATED to be brushed and acted like they were dying. They would allow me to brush them a little with it. Now I use a slicker brush and comb, they don't like it. Zowie stands still and shivers. I have to hog tie Bronx in my arm, he is very strong and wiggly. I couldn't find the T-shirt thing in that link. Do you put it over their head?

I read the article in the book I mentioned above. I just found a little T-shirt at a shop here in town...It says "Talk to the Paw" Paw being a picture sort of like the little paw on this post. I just slip it over his head and put it on his front paws. He didn't like it at first and tried to back out of it...so funny...but now he doesn't mind it. I use the brush first and do his back and back legs and then go to his head and eventually to his front paws. Then I remove the shirt and he is calmer, so I finish up with the front part of his body. It is not a miracle worker, but has helped to calm him down a little. I think the size on this one is an x-small. I tried to post a picture, but couldn't figure out how to get it into the post...I will try to get one into the photo gallery.
