Default Beware of HAWKS taking small animals!

I just wanted to let ones know who were not aware that a Hawk can carry away a small animal like a Yorkie. My husband had seen a hawk carry away a squirrel and then someone told him that cats and rabbits have been seen being taken by hawks in our neighborhood.
We have a fenced in yard and I have just let Tasha play in the yard with another dog that we have. After hearing this I started to get concerned as to whether a hawk could carry away Tasha who weighs 5 lbs. I mentioned this to our pet sitter and she said that is correct that about hawks. She told of a friend who lost a Papillon to a hawk who was out in her front yard with her two dogs early in the am. Before she could blink her eye the hawk had the smaller of the two dogs, about 5lbs. and she never saw it again! This was 2 years ago and she still hasn't gotten over the loss.
I just can not imagine how horrible this would be happen to my precious Tasha!! I now go out with her and watch her every second.
I just wanted to let you know to be aware of what a hawk can do.

Living in Fl the hawks are quite large. I have heard of them carring off small dogs. I would never have my kids in the yard unattended.

I worry about this all the time! This is exactly why my babies never go outside unless I am out there watching them. We have huge owls that perch themselves up on the telephone pole in the back of my house, and they freak me out too. You just never know what might happen.

OMG! I know, this is just sooo scary....the thought of it just makes me sick. When my skin kids were just infants I was lying out on the deck in the sun and they were out there with me in there stroller, and I suddenly noticed a huge shadow above me blocking my sun, I looked up and it was a HUGE bird of some sort (probobly a hawk) circling around us!! I hurried up and grabbed the kids and went in the house! If my dogs are outside, they are ALWAYS with ME and on a leash. I cant even imagine what that poor woman went through losing her baby in such a horrible way.. It is so good that people posts things like this as it sure does remind everyone that we have to keep these babies close and constantly think of the problems that could arise. Thanks for the post.

You are so right!!! Last October, my precious little boy Yorkie, Tigger, was taken by a hawk from his VERY secluded dog run. I cried for weeks imagining those last horrific moments. I cannot stress this strongly enough!!! A hawk WILL take your Yorkie. Don't ever put yourself or your baby through the same heartbreak we went through....... My dog run now has a permanent cover constructed over its entire length. My furbabies now only go into my garden under my very watchful eye, otherwise they are inside ALL the time, just using their dog run to potty.

Sgab80 I am so sorry to hear about your cat. You must of just been heatbroken.
Laurenr, how I feel for you in loosing your precious Tigger to a hawk! My heart is just so sad to even think about it. and the pain you must of had to deal with the loss of Tigger! You have given me more than ever the need to be deligent in watchng Tasha every second she is outside. It is so easy to get careless and let her run and play and before I know it she is out of my sight. I guess I will just make sure she is on a leash whenever she is outside.
Thank you for sharing your story as it can be of great help to others!

How weird that I saw this post tonight. We were out with our two dogs tonight talking to our neighbor who had his pet bird on his shoulder. A hawk was circling high above us, going between our yards!
I will never let our 4lb. Yorkie out by herself. Our our other dog is around 15lbs, I don't think a hawk could take her, I would hope not.

OMG how awful !!!!!!!!!!! I think this is a very important warning and can't be said enough - I too know someone who's little 4 pound yorkie was taken by a hawk and she was only a few feet away when it happened....Shes a member here now and maybe will share her story but the first time I heard it I was in tears .....IT can happen in the blink of an eye !!

Remember - hawks prey on Rabbits and other small creatures....a little yorkie is no challange for them....and even if they don't 'fly' off with the animal - the Talons can kill.

I live in the country and I have lost cats and chickens to hawks so I always am with my YT when were outside.
Be sure to tell friends with small pets who are NOT on YT about the danger.

A hawk could not lift the 15lb dog but it surely can kill it with its talons. It happens out here is Arizona quite a bit so please keep a watchful eye even on your larger pets.

Thank you so much for your kind words. You are so right to keep your little Tasha on a leash if your area is at risk for birds of prey. I am so very careful now, especially this time of the year. I live in the hills and there are tons of rabbits and squirrels, so I often see those birds circling. I still shudder every time I see them.

You are so right about those talons!! Last year my vet told me he had treated a little Dachshund that had been lacerated by a hawk's claws; he said that this was not uncommon.
