I have stopped in front of Lowes...that's where I've seen them sell...once, they had Cockers and another time, cow dogs. I heard from a friend of mine that someone was once selling Maltese AKC for $600. To me, it all depends on what kind of dog it is and the asking price. The norm might tell you that they are mill pups but you might just get honest people out there. Could be people that live in the country and is too much of a hassle to explain how to get to their house. Others may just be precautious about strangers.

I think that they must be from irrisponsiable pet owners. who probably didn't know that their dogs were bred. I would never buy from one of them becuasce they could at least sell them in their own home.

Well I think it is a really bad idea, both for the pups and the owner.
Also if someone sees you selling expensive dogs in front of the Walmart all they have to do is follow you home and rob you there.
My belief is you and the pups are safer at home. Just set an appt for when you are not alone when they come to see the pups.

it was so scary my mom was really freaking out and my husband was so worried and mad at the same time! and imagine this was on post!and fort lewis is suppose to be one of the safest and most guarded posts i guess you just never know huh?

Go to NoPuppymills or Amish Puppy Mills and you will see what I have seen. Makesure you have a good stomach..it is the saddest thing you can imagine. There is a rescue SmallPawsRescue also that buys dogs and puppies from the auctions in MO. Yorkie rescue ites have some of the cases on them too..
OF COURSE, NOT ALL PUPPY MILLS ARE RUN BY THE AMISH AND NOT ALL AMISH RUN PUPPY MILLS!

A friend of my was in a similar position. A woman put down a deposit on a pup. She called her when the pup was ready. Her son told my friend his mother lost her job and he and his wife were going to take the pup. Well, the wife showed up with a new born baby. My friend was asking her question about how she was going to care for a small pup and a baby at the same time ..the girl said I’ll just carry one in each arm. She said they had a big dog in the house and she then asked where the pup would be sleeping. The woman said they would find it a spot. While the woman was there she almost dropped the pup. My friend told her she was sorry but she just could not sell her the pup and gave her the deposit back. The woman started to cry ..she left and her husband called later, cussing my friend out. They had someone else to call to see it the she still had pup ..she told them it was sold. Then the mother called and cussed her too. I told her I would have done the same thing .If I didn’t feel my babies were not going to a good and safe home.. then I would not sell them either. She was afraid , of the people trying to get a hold of one of her pups. Now, she is alittle afraid of people coming to her house now. Anyway, the pup went to a good home… she came to live with me.

I heard a story on the news that happend here in the Dallas Texas area where a couple was giving away kittens out of their car at a walmart store. They gave all the kittens away except for one. Tons of people petted and cuddled the kittens. Next thing you know the remaining kitten has rabies and they had to broadcast on the news for anyone whom came in contact with the kittens or took one of them to get in touch with health department. Happened about a year or so ago. Never heard the outcome but just want to caution people about it.

It bothers me to see people selling dogs in parking lots. I feel good breeders who care about there puppies should know something about there future owners and as a buyer I would want to see where my puppy lived.

I totally understand your position. I think this is part of the reason that some hobby breeders use small town pet stores (not to start that debate again).

A breeder I talked to had a relationship with a doggy clothing store in her town and met people there for the first visit. She never sold the puppy at that visit but assessed the situation and decided whether she wanted to sell to them first and then arranged the second visit to her home after getting all the necessary information and checking their references, etc.

You may try something like this. I don't think selling in front of walmart is good at all or along side the road. It smacks or impropriety.

That is a great idea! Might have to try that one. I have sold one of my pups and we've communicated on the phone and via e-mail. Now, people like that I feel good about and wouldn't care either way if they came to my home. But, I guess that gut instinct is always best.

I personaly would not buy from someone selling at a store or side of the road or a puppy mill . I got my baby a few weeks ago and I never saw in person were she lived but I got lots of picts and weekly updates of her and her litter mates and parents also how she lived, were she lived. I guess you just have to really be careful. I also think that you should set up a web page and just go by that until you really feel good about who you are buying from or selling to.. my breeder and I meet half way when I pick up my baby( just because it was a far drive and i didnt want to have my baby flown to me if she was in state.) We talked for 2 months right before she was born, she is healthy and very clean and well kept. I may have just gotten lucky put I would really screen the people that I would sell my pups to. Defently meet them first before inviting them in my home. My family means the world to me and that includes my furbabies I would just die if I something horrible happened and it could have been prevented with a little extra time and effort. I guess I have a few things to say about that sorry. I guess in these days and times you just have to be so careful in everything you do.. its so scary.

Living in a retirement community, small town I guess I don't see alot of the things folks in bigger cities see. It may be illegal here or just not something that happens, I have never seen anyone selling or giving out pets in store parking lots or roadsides. If I did I would probably call the police because there is a reason they dont have elsewhere to meet people or other avenues of advertising/selling. I would assume the animals were sickly probably dehydrated at the very least.

There are places to meet people if you are afraid to have folks come to your home. The veterinarian of your dogs is a good place. Where is better and who better to help assess new owners then your trusted vet? With any luck the new puppy parents would use your vet and you could get updates or possibly run into them there=).

When I first got Joker my vet suggested I go to his office every saturday (busiest day) to socialize him with people and all kinds of other animals to begin his socialization for Therapy Dog.Maybe I am lucky to have a great vet but I know if I asked hey can I meet people in your office he would probably have coffee and a room available to me.
