Serious Anxiety!!

Holy Cow! My little Lexi will not stop crying when I put her in her crate, crib, & kitchen where she can roam. Even if she can see me she freaks out!! I've only had her for 5 days. She is 9 weeks old and not taking this transition well at all. She ALWAYS wants to be held, and if I'm not holding her she is sitting on my feet, or touching me in some way always needing to cuddle. I have to stick my fingers in her crate at night all through the night to keep her from yelling at me.

I would be able to let her cry, but she gets herself so upset that her blood suger levels start to drop. Her gums get pale and she gets really depressed. I don't know what to do!!! Anyone experience this before? And what about the hypoglycemia? I think I'm gonna need a doctor if this doesn't stop.

awww poor baby. I don't really know the right thing to tell you to do, but I would keep her on my lap when I'm sitting, and let her sleep with me. mine arent cuddlers most of the time and I think back had I done this they would be cuddle bugs. which I wanted from the start

thanks so much for the quick response! I've been keeping her on my lap but I'm afraid of spoiling her. And will this make things worse when I do have to leave? She can't sleep with us yet because she's just over a pound and I'm afraid we will smush her. Your two can have a little of her cuddle bugness, she's got plenty

oh she is tiny. well yea that makes sleeping with her right now a little hard... how about a small crate aside of you in bed for now? ( since she is so tiny one of those used to take small animals to the vet in? she would be close enough for her to see and smell you but she wont get hurt

oh i just saw she is only 9 weeks old, maybe this has to do with her being so young, most here dont send the puppy to a new home till 12 weeks or more for a tiny one....,
she might still be wanting/needing her mommy
not sure...you will get more replies I am sure

Hi, Heather. Your baby sounds alot like mine did. We brought her home at about 9 weeks, also. She was a crier. My breeder lives in the same town so when we first met my Lexie and put our deposit down she asked me to bring a blanket for her to sleep on. For the next 3 weeks Lexie's mom & littermates were sleeping with Lexie on this blanket. When we brought her home she had the same (stinky lol) blanket to sleep with. I think it was a great source of comfort for her. I made her a little "condo" out of a play pen and had her crate with the door off for her. Whenever she would be "put to bed" she'd curl right up on that blanket and go to sleep. Before I put the blanket in the playpen she would practically scream all night. I don't know if you live near your breeder or not but I wonder if she could give you a toy or a blanket that might smell like "home" for your Lexi. We also bought her a cuddle buddy type of plush toy to put in her crate with her that might remind her of mom. My breeder also told me that until Lexie was about 12 weeks to keep a couple small drops of Karo syrup mixed in with her water and to always keep Nutri-stat handy just in case her sugar dropped....luckily it never did. I ramble some so I hope I was even slightly helpful for you.

I too think she's just so young that she hates to be alone If you can't get something with her mother's scent, use one of your shirts that you've worn for a bit so it has your scent on it, and let it be her blankie when you're not holding her. It will take time for her to learn that you will 'always' be back. I don't see anything wrong with holding her whenever possible now - she's so young and tiny. Oh, I just remembered that a couple people on here have bought that little stuffed animal that has a bean bag inside that you warm in the microwave. The puppies like to snuggle up with it. Might be worth a try

Great suggestion. Usually the advice is to ignore any crying dog because they have to get used to the crate... otherwise they'll learn that crying will get them the attention their craving and they'll use that to their advantage. In your case though, if her blood sugar levels are dropping that's not the best way to go. Hypoglycemia in yorkie pups is serious business, I went through all that with my boy.

She's soooo young so she's going to need lots of special care for now. Don't worry too much about spoiling her, because as she adjusts to her new home you can ween her off the constant attention. For us, Raja was more work than a newborn! (serious hypoglycemia & pancreaitis)

Excellent advice! Remember this is the first time she is away from her
mother and litter mates. There was always someone she could cozy up
to and was familar with all the scents. Plus 9wks is still so young to
expect anything other than what's she doing. It takes time for them to
get confidence in their new surroundings and you. I would say at least
another month before you can expect her to go about on her own and not
need you so much.
Have patience and remember you have a new born baby in your care who
knows nothing about the world.

THANKS SO MUCH GUYS! I feel so encouraged by your stories. I'm not at all frustrated with her, just really worried about her! I put her in the kitchen with her crate as well as food and water so we could go to church, I just got home and found her sitting on top of her crate instead of in it. She must be a funny cat
