| Let the BITING begin!!! Goodness, gracious! I really hope that Luna must be teething big time because all she does is BITE! At playtime she somehow finds our hands more interesting than her chew toys... and boy is it painful!! Any suggestions? What did you all do to manage through this stage? or is it even only a stage? lol

| FunkyMunkie, I thought it was just my Dolce that bit ALL THE TIME!!! She is much more interested in my hands or whoevers hands are free at the moment then the 20 toys she has lying around. Even when we try and play with her with the toys she would much rather be chewing on our hands!! Even when we tell her "NO BITE!" she still does it. I asked my vet and he said that she will grow out of it. I really hope so because those little teeth certainly do hurt!! Maybe there is someone on this board who can help us out!! |

| It's a stage. BUT.....don't allow them to "play bite" your hands! EVERY time, say "NO BITING!" sternly, offer a toy, and if they continue to bite, put them down and cease all play immediately for at least 15 minutes. They LOVE you to play with them and will begin to associate their biting with all play stopping and grow out of it quicker. This has worked for us. It's funny, Don likes it when Higgins plays rough with him and will let him play bite. I don't like it, and Higgins never play bites with me! See how smart they are???!!!! |

| Yeah, when Luna gets really hyper and starts to bite everything in site we put her down in her play pen until she calms down. I think we have to be more consistent in saying "no bite" then put her down. We usually let her bite for a few then get really annoyed and put her in her play pen (with no toys of course). We'll see, she's still a put so I don't expect her to be perfect.

| Biting is very bad to allow, if you allow it now, they will learn that it is an acceptable procedure. They like the salty taste of your hands and skin. Everytime they chew something they shouldn't, this includes your hands or toes, tell them no in a sharp vi=oice and give them something else to chew on, or put something like bitter apple, or I use hot sauce, on the item you don't want them to chew. Of course if you have a dog that ends up liking hot sauce, then try lemon juice. I have one yorkie that likes hot sauce, so I use the lemon juice for him. I coated my electric cords, and my computer cords with hot sauce to stop mine from chewing. |

| i am having the same experience with nemo, I can't play with him because of it, I really hope he grows out of it too, right now he is upset and crying because i put him in his kennel to give him and me a rest from the biting. Last edited by Gale; 11-09-2004 at 02:25 PM. |

| We used the loud "ouch" or "NO" using our "Alpha" voices to stop Toto from biting and nipping ... we always immediately gave her something that she was supposed to bite on and it worked for us! She knows the difference in play biting and actually hurting! I believe the most important thing is to make sure they have lots and lots of chewing things around.

| Luna was put in her pen three times for her biting today. Immediately after I took her out she'd start biting again, so I put her back in without toys. She has now fallen asleep. I am so afraid of depressing her. AND here's some evidence, little Ms. Luna in my lap trying to bite my hand, while trying to take a picture of her, just look at her little TEETH! http://www.hometown.aol.com/ma0984/images/luna1.gif P.S. That lemon juice has worked for tonight's play time! Not as much biting on the hands, I'm afraid to cause her mouth to chap... but I am assuming no one has had these problems if not we would've already heard of it. Thanks everyone!

| Geez, that Luna is cute!!! We just gave Yoda a timeout and quarantined him (usually on the dinner table, high enough that he's afraid to jump off) when he bit. And always had a stern NO for him when he did so. He loves to lick now though, and we do let him get away with that. |

| Melissa, how can you resist that little face?!! If Luna were ours, we would be "gnawed" to pieces!! Neither of us would have the heart to punish that little one!! I know they must be punished to achieve good manners .... but darn it's hard to do ... they are so adorable!!!

| Oh, trust me, once you feel her little sharp teeth getting a good grip on your fingers, you will more than willingly put her on time out! However, it does break my heart when I see her with nothing to do in time out, she gives me this adorable face like saying "why did you do this to me?", but you know what, I think it'll pay off in the end...We must get rid of her rascals way ASAP! hehe... she needs to understand that chewing on toys is the only way to chew!

| Just a thought, Mellisa....When you put Luna in a time out in her pen, leave some of her toys in there. That way she will get the idea that she can chew on her own toys, not you. They HAVE to chew because they are teething and learning. But they REALLY want to play with you, so the time out to amuse themselves still works. And you won't have to feel guilty. Give her LOTS of toys. We put all Higgins toys in a big low basket and he LOVES rooting around in that basket finding the toy he wants. He also has a special little toybox in our camper. Yesterday he went in the camper for the first time in two months and was OVERJOYED to see he camper toybox and toys again. When they have LOTS of toys, they don't chew up your stuff so much. And it really helps as a substitute for playbiting. |

| Oh that's a great suggestion. I always thought I would have to really punish them, as if they were a child and take everything away, I'm a mean mom. I will have to leave her in her play pen with her toys then! Thanks!
