| Need Advice And Opinions after reading about the yorkie that fell off a boat and drowned , i need some advice and help with the following: we spend about 2 weeks 3 times a year on our houseboat located at lake powell, we got our yorkie a month after our last trip of 04, milo is now 11 months old , should we take him along?, we will have a life preserver on him whenever he is outside as well as on a leash, doggie doors at all entrance's and a doggie door for the bedroom, he will have doggles for his eyes, and we will have our eye on him at times , we thought of leaving him but i don't think we could be apart for 2 weeks , he's very attached to his "mommy". any comments are welcome as well as ideas. i'm brand new to this forum and have found everyone to be very helpful. thanks in advance. michael " father " to milo metheny morton |

| I can understand your concerns after hearing about that poor yorkie when my friends and I rented a house boat for the weekend we always made sure they have the jackets on and we keep them on! also I bring a playpen and keep them in it. and just keep them within your site at all times, just like you would an infant or child.. and welcome to yorkie talk!! |

| I think that's great advice. You have to act as though you have a toddler around and take every precaution. test the doggy life jacket you get. I got one for Hefner and it actually pushes his head under the water because of the collar so just don't expect it to "save" him if he falls in but at least he will float. I had to cut the collar off so he could lift his head up when he is in the water. |

| I alway beleive it's a good idea to teach them to swim too, just incase they fall into water when they aren't wearing a jacket. |

| Welcome Michael and Milo! By all means take him with you. Has he ever been in the water to swim? Try it and see how he reacts just be sure that the water is swimming temperature, he may love it. But make sure that he does wear his life vest at all times on the boat, he'll get used to it, just like kids do. This way if he gets into the water unexpectedly you'll have time to go get him. He may never even want to get close to going in. You'll have a better vacation if he is with you. Have fun...Theresa & The Boys |

| Welcome to YT. We have a pontoon and are on Table Rock Lake a lot during the late spring and late summerl, (it gets too hot during the summer, and I burn bad, must be that English Rose complexion, LOL). Jack is 7 months old and I have ordered a life jacket for him, next week he will have his first boat trip, and I am really hoping he will be a water dog. I think it is so cute when boats go bye with dogs on them that are real sailors.

| My father's friends have taken their ShihTzu sailing around the world. He is trained to only pee and poop Once a day . I would take pee pads if your dog uses them and I would also attach a flashing light to his life jacket if he is on deck at night. I am sure your dog will LOVE IT !!!!! We are buying Mya a life jacket before we take her to the cottage this weekend.

| We have a boat that we are repairing and hope to put in the water this summer. I plan on taking Autumn out in it, I don't know about the others but we will be getting a life jacket for her before she ever sets foot in the boat. The way I look at it is: If something happens and my kids are in the boat I'll be going after them and I hate like H*ll to say it but my kids have to come before my babies in a dangerous situation. I can't worry about my furbabies if my skinkids need me. Dam, I hate saying that. LOL The other thing of watching them like toddlers is how I watch them anyways. It's how they act! Always something in their mouths, slipping out the door if they can, getting into things that are left down within their reach -- toddlers! Sylvia P.S. I forgot, someone put one of those little flashing lights on their dogs top knot so they could see *him* in the dark. I thot that might not be such a bad idea for if you are out on the boat. If (God forbid) anything should happen maybe the pup could be found by the little light. Sylvia Last edited by Lady of Yorkies; 05-26-2005 at 01:27 AM. |

| Mortbike - you may be pleasantly surprised if your Yorkie swims immediately! We put Sophie into our backyard pool earlier this week and she started swimming before she even hit the water. Precautions are still in order, but it's peace of mind knowing they can swim instead of sink. |
