| Should I get a second? Hello all- I'm looking for some advice. My husband and I are proud owners of the most loving, wonderful 1-year-old yorkie boy, Finnegan. We are now starting to think about getting a second yorkie. My only worry is that my Finnegan will change. I would love to hear from anyone who has added a second yorkie to the family...Did you notice changes in behavior, depression, potty accidents, becoming less affectionate? Do you recommend getting a second dog? Does the sex of the second dog matter? Thank you all for your input!

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | I say go for it if you can afford the additional expense. I got lulu when lex was a year old and we had a bit of jealousy for maybe three or four days. I made sure to be home to watch them and acclimate them. I babied the heck out of him for the first few days that she came and didn't give her a ton of attention. After those few days all was well. They are best buds now. I chose to get a female so we wouldn't have any of the alpha behaviour in the house plus I wanted a girl to do the girly things to her...lol. Good luck in choosing. It's been great because they have each other to play with and she is learning to go potty outside faster because of him.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I just added a 2nd Yorkie (3rd dog) and Cali was not real happy. She is getting better and it's been 5 weeks. I think their are some jealousy issues but in the long run they like to have other dogs to play with. Cali has had a few accidents but I think it is because she used the wee wee pad in the playpen for the last 1 1/2 years and when I got Pixie i started putting her in there and Cali got upset. But I am so happy I got Pixie. I think the younger your first one is the easier it is for them to accept a new one. Good luck

| Absolutely! We just got Zeus (3 1/2) a sister and he has never been happier. Zeus is and always has been completely spoiled rotten, but he was more than happy to share with his little sister! He is still just as loving as ever. Best decision we ever made!!

| We got Piper 5 months after getting Misha. The girls got along great from the beginning. A year later we got Max. Piper & Max get along real well. We have had Max for 6 weeks & Misha our 1 year old is just starting to like Max. She still bites him to hard, but she is adjusting. I'd say go for it.

| I got another female puppy about a month ago. I thought Bailey was a bit lonely during the day because my hubby doesn't have a home office anymore. It was a bit rough for a week or so. Bailey's feelings were a bit hurt. But they are pretty good friends now. Bailey will be 2 April 30th and is very attentive to the puppy. They run all over the house together and are starting to snuggle up together while napping. (avatar pic) I can tell they are having fun because of the trail of toys all over the house.

| I was asking this exact question a little over a month ago, and after all the positive advice I added a second. Jeter is going to be 2 in June. He is a male. I got Sky, a female, the end of January. Jeter is wonderful with her. She is a pistol, and bites him all the time, but he loves her to pieces. When she is in her playpen, he cries for her to come out and bite him. Jeter has had no negative effects to the addition of Sky, except for the loss of a little bit of hair. He has had no potty accidents and is just as loving. If anything, he is a little more outgoing. Good luck with your decision. |

| Thanks Your thoughts are so encouraging! Does anyone have two boys? Finn is not much of an alpha, so I'm wondering if he'd do okay with another boy...

| Yes, we have 2 boyz...hence my user name! They are about 6 months apart, both neutered, I don't think that either of them have alpha personalities, they love each other and will seek each other out when they're out of sight, they snuggle, play and protect the neighborhood together and they make the perfect house alarm! They spend their days following each other around the house and they play a little but mostly they lay in their window and watch their front yard! Jo has a bit of an independant personality and Riley is a total velcro dog so I think it's a good mix. We don't have any marking, chewing, fighting or inappropriate behavior issues...they're good boyz and they don't embarrass me when we have company! |
