| How Big is too Big I took my bruiser to the vet yesterday to have two teeth pulled. He is nine months old. To my surprise they said he weighed 10lbs. I know he should not weight that much, so should I cut back on his food a little or do you have any other suggestions. I usually keep food in his bowl for him so I think maybe I am feeding him too much. |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | My Lex is 9 1/2 lbs. You can see he is big but you wouldn't guess that much. The vet told me he has heavy bones...whatever. How much do you feed him a day. I feed Lex 1 cup a day. That is more than enough for him and he tends to leave some behind. Not all yorkies are standard or tiny. AKC says standard is like 6-7 pounds. Yorkies sizes can't be guaranteed. They were a bit bigger doggies way back when and the breed has been downsized some. There are a lot of other folks on here with teapot yorkies. Matter of fact there is a little group of yt folks on dogster that belong to a group of bigger yorkies.

| I feed him about a cup a day, but if i have a snack he wants one too. It doesnt really matter to me if he is a bigger yorkie, I will love him anyway, I just dont want his health to be in trouble. |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | If you are feeding him good food and healthy snacks then you have nothing to worry about. If you find that he is putting on a lot of weight then you might want to reevaluate what you are giving him. Lex also eats a cup a day and Lulu eats from it as well. I don't over do the snacks and he is a big healthy boy. Odds are your baby boy is just not what is considered standard but hey he is your love muffin. Did the vet mention anything about his weight?

| It probably isn't that he is fat, it's just that he is larger than the standard size (thus nothing you can do about it.. that all has to do with genetics).

| Did the vet say anything about him being overweight or needing to restrict his food intake? If you don't think he's chubby, then he's probably just a large yorkie and he's weighs just what he should. |

| I dont think you mentioned whether Bruiser was supposed to be a teacup or not. If you got him thinking he is, then he's not because i dont believe they are to get that big. Remy is now 11 mos and is just 5.3 lbs. (teacup). I, too, leave food in his bowl at all times, and he eats when hes hungry or on my schedule, and hes maintained his weight. When i got him, the breeder told me he would max out at 5 lbs. But i think it can vary slightly. I like that, "Teapot" Thats so cute! Im sure hes perfectly healthy. Just make sure hes not eating 3-4x a day anymore, by 9 mos, he should cut down to about 2x a day. |

| Ahh, the great weight debate... Remy, 5.3 pounds is not a teacup. In fact, no where in the standard does it distinquish teapot...teacup...and so on. Your Yorkie is actually perfectly within the standard of 4-7 pounds. To the original poster- Your little boy, while out of standard in weight, may just be a bigger Yorkie. If you weren't planning on breeding him or showing him then I'd just love him the way he is. No need to cut back his food if the vet or staff said nothing about him being obese. And besides, even if he were "fat" he'd still probably be a 8 or 9 pound Yorkie w/ the weight off. He's just a big kid and I'd love to see photos! |

| You all are so great, thanks for all your replies, I dont really care if he is above "standard", he is still the love of my life and I love him dearly. His vet did say he is healthy so thats all that matters to me. |

| I agree with all the responses you got, nothing to worry about. Our 2 year old Tiger is a full 9lb. He is just that size, and certainly not over weighted All the tea cup toy cup nonsense is nothing else but a marketing term by all the breeders. Trust me when I tell you, you rather have a 10lb yorkie than a 3lb. You will have less health problems. When I asked our Vet if 9lb is too much, he basicaly laughed at me and said its totally normal. So no worries. Good Luck Thanks, |
