| Raw Food Diet Does anyone give their dog a raw food diet, or have experience with this? I went into a USDA approved dog deli (www.doggydelifood.com), and the owner, who seemed very knowledgable, gave us some free food to try. Do any other yorkies eat this way? |

| Raw Food cont... Do you see changes in the poop and body odor? The man said he would poop only a few times a week, and he wouldn't have any dog smell anymore? |

| Yes, I can see some changes already and they've only been on NV for about 3 weeks. Jo-Jo usually gets oily and needs a bath twice a week but now he's getting back on track and he's back down to once a week groomings. They also have no bad breath, no messy faces and when they go potty it's very firm and small...they usually go once a day (maybe teice if they eat any dry food) and there's no foul smell. I started them on this because I think Jo either has allergies or some sensitivities to commercial dog food ingredients. Jo still licks his feet but not near as much as before and yesterday I noticed that it looks like his facial hair is finally starting to grow again. His hair grows very slow and for the longest time the hair on his head stood straight up and looked like it wasn't growing at all but now it seems to be laying down much better and it looks a little longer. So, yes, I am seeing some changes and I know I'm geeding my boyz better and that makes me feel good! |

No Longer a Member | OK, so my interest is piqued... Tell me how you do it. I mean. Do you have to thaw it? How long? How long can it sit out? That kind of thing. My dog is so picky, and she just went through a 2 day food strike, that I'm thinking of alternatives. Also, how much do the medallions cost? Thanks, |

| You can check out the food here: www.naturesvariety.com I buy the beef flavored frozen, raw medallions...they're shaped like a small burger. I buy a box of the cheapo snack sized plastic bags and each night I put 2 medallions in a bag...I use 2 bags for a total of 4 medallions because I have 2 to feed. I put the baggies in the fridge and they're thawed out for breakfast and dinner for the next day. After I feed them their dinner I put 2 new bags with the next days' medallions in them and put them in the fridge so they'll be ready. You can also thaw them in the microwave but that's not a good idea...they should be cold to the touch when fed. I bought the small Corelle berry bowls to feed them in...I break up each medallion with 2 forks so it's in small, bite sized pieces and so I can check for large pieces of bone. That's rare to find but I have taken out a couple that I didn't think were safe...but...I'm overly paranoid! It's really an easy routine to get into and I do feel better knowing I'm feeding the boyz a great food that they absolutely love. There are different flavors and each bag has from 40 to 42 medallions in it...that lasts 2 weeks for 2 small dogs. I don't know if this food is priced the same everywhere but it's $13.99 a bag where I shop. Yes, it does cost a bit more to feed this food but I feel it's worth it. |

Lovin' 2 Girls Donating Member | Well, everyone knows I feed a RAW (human-grade meat & meaty bones from the grocery store), species-appropriate prey model diet. But, it seems to either gross people out, or they think I'm killing my dogs! lol Yes, there are LOTS of differences in a pooch fed a species appropriate diet to those fed commercial kibble. Even some of the so-called 'natural' foods have carbohydrates in them. Dogs are CARNIVORES, they do NOT need veggies or rice.

| As far as the food sitting out...that shouldn't be a problem...it takes my boyz about 5 seconds to eat theirs so it never sits out! I put their little bowls down and by about the time I stand up they're empty already. |

No Longer a Member | Teri, Thanks for the information. That does sound like an easy way to do it to start. Abbie's mom: I know someone nearby who raw feeds her dogs, but they are Siberian Huskies, and of course they can handle much larger pieces of meat than our yorkies can. I'm wondering though, since you feed the meat from the store, what you do about bones. I know they need them for the calcium, and I understand that in their raw form, they don't pose the same danger as, say, cooked chicken bones, but yorkies are small, so how do you find your dogs do with the bones you give them? And what do you give them? I've been tempted to give Chloe the chicken neck when I'm cooking a chicken for dinner, but I worry about if she can even chew those little bones. Thanks for the info. |

No Longer a Member | It would be so wonderful if Chloe would just wolf down her food rather than pick at it or not eat it at all... |

| I guess I am lucky because there is a store close by where everything is fresh. The owner says the food is 95% beef, and 5% fruits and veggies. There are no beef by-products (no dead rendered cattle) grains, fillers, or preservatives. It looks like a butcher shop. He gave me a 2lb. container of his HO-CHUNK (www.doggydelifood.com) for free, but it looks like it is about 9.00. He also keeps natural bones there for chewing, but he recommends the diet contain only meat. He has some interesting links to free e-books online, also. So far, Piper has not turned his nose up at any of it! |

| I started feeding Lilo nature's veriety raw meet medalions and she just LOVE it. I went and bought her one 3lb bag of organic chicken and i got one 3 lb bag of lamb flavour for free ,with this coupon: http://www.naturesvariety.com/iloveit/ I think that in long run it will be very beneficial to her health nad it's sooooo easy to feed. I usually sprinkle one medalion with missing link and serve it to her this way. I feed her one medalion in the morning and one at night. during the day she free feeds on her kibbles. She thinks that it's the best treat EVER!!! Shhhhhh . just don't tell her that it's her regular food now

| Those on the raw food diet, they ONLY get meat, right? Do you have to supplement anything else?

| The only thing my boyz get is the NV medallions now. I've taken up their dry food and I don't use any supplements...their food is complete. They do make a dry kibble too but I was told they don't need the dry when they're on the raw diet. For snacks I give them fruits and veggies. |
