| Hello Hello, My name is Jeanette and I live in Oliver Springs, TN. My 10-year-old granddaughter just got a Yorkshire Terrier puppy. I have had dogs all my life, but never a Yorkie, so I'm looking for advice from people who have a lot of experience with them. Her name is Samantha and she is 6 and 1/2 weeks old. I was concerned because she is so young. I think she should have stayed with her mother until at least 8 weeks of age. Any advice about taking care of such a young puppy? I have two Bichons, Lacy, age 9, and Cosmo, age 8. Cosmo is a therapy dog and we visit the Children's Library twice a week where he gets lots of petting and the kids read stories to him. Thank you for any advice. Jeanette |

| Welcome! You've come to the right place. Six and a half weeks IS young. She will definitely need to be watched carefully...hopefully, your granddaughter's Mom will be very involved while the pup is so young. Read some of the threads about care and you will definitely learn a lot as I did. |

| Welcome to the list. Yes, 6 1/2 weeks was definately too young. All you can do is watch to see that she is getting plenty of food and rest. Don't let the pup be handled too much. Watch for signs of hyperglycemia. Good luck

| Congratulations on the new addition. My advice would be to teach your granddaughter the "yorkie shuffle"...In our house, we have ended up shuffling our feet when we walk so that we don't step on Chloe. She weighed just under two pounds when we brought her home. Now she is close to four at almost five months. There was a heartbreaking story of a new puppy dying from being stepped on on this board when we first got Chloe so we were extra attentive to this detail. We have a very active eight year old, but he is very mature for his age, too. We talked over and over about how delicate these little puppies are, how you have to be careful not to drop her or let her jump from your arms, and how you have to make sure not to step on her. Of course, when she is zooming around the house at break neck speed, she doesn't appear very fragile! One other thought, we had a bout of hypothermia and hypoglycemia and had a little trip to the vet. She wasn't used to sleeping by herself, and we ended up buying a heating disc from Petsmart to put in her kennel with her every night. Her crate is on the floor, of course, and the warm air rises. We didn't think of that, and the blankets we had in there were not enough. This little disc goes in the microwave for a few minutes and stays warm all night. She loves it, and we haven't had any other problems. We used Karo syrup when she would get the shakes...just a little on her tongue. She outgrew that pretty quickly. And...last but not least...because she was so small, she didn't do well with her puppy shots. She would get very sore and yelp if you touched her for about two days. She wouldn't walk. I'd have to carry her to her bowl and carry her outside. We talked to our vet and they ended up giving the following shots separately and prescribing a medication called Traumeel. It's a NSAID...kinda like aspirin and motrin. We gave her just a tiny bit...like 1/4 cc a couple of times after her shots and we didn't have anymore trouble. Good luck. I hope maybe some of this helped. Tell your baby to enjoy her new furbaby! |

| Hi and Welcome. You can also put a little cat bell on her so that everyone can hear her when she is running around. Yorkies love to be wherever you are and are always under your feet. Can't wait to see some pics of the little darling.

| Welcome to YorkieTalk! How wonderful that your granddaughter lives with you! Since you already have Bichons you are already many steps ahead of helping to raise Samantha. Just like any small breeds, hypoglycemia is definitely a biggie to keep an eye on. If you dont have it already, get some Nutri-Cal to keep the bloodsugar up. Feed the puppy several small meals instead of 2 or 3 larger meals. As the puppy grows older, the feeding periods can be reduced. Also, like a Bichon, Yorkies need to be groomed a lot so get Samantha used to brushing, combing and introduce her to the blow dryer - slowly! Did you have specific questions? If you do, you can just ask or click on the "Search" button and type in a few words and see if you can find your answer. What is your granddaughter's name? And we would love to know more about your Bichons too! Name? Age? Gender? If you need help finding your way around YT let us know. Hope you will post pictures soon. Can wait to see your family!

| I got Rebel when he was 6 weeks old. I made sure I kept food and fresh water out at all times and made sure to watch him eat. He's never had any hypoglycemic episodes. I already had a female a little over 6 months old when I got him so I was used to yorkies. I also gave him nutri cal twice a day and still keep it on hand just in case. He's 6 months old now and weighs 3 lbs. I'm sure your granddaughter's puppy will be fine since you're experienced with small dogs.

| I got Bruiser when he was six weeks old. He has always been healthy, I haven't had any problems with him. I made sure to feed him several times a day and he always had fresh water. He is ten months old now and spoiled rotten. |

| Hi Hi Dan and Corinne, Thanks for all the information. My granddaughter doesn't live with me, but she's only 15 minutes away. I wasn't aware of the hypoglycemia thing - it apparently isn't something usual to Bichons. Many thanks for that information and I'll pass it on to my son. I've already told them to touch Samantha all over while they're petting her, ears, tail, feet, tummy, all over, so she won't pay any attention to being touched while being groomed. Also told them to gently look in her mouth often. I don't think they'll be grooming her themselves, but she will have to be brushed and combed and getting her used to the sound of a dryer would be good. My granddaughter's name is Brianna. She's my only grandchild and she's the apple of my eye, for sure! She's a cheerleader and she takes gymnastics and plays basketball. She's learning to play a viola this year, too. She and my Bichon, Lacy, have grown up together. My Bichons are Lacy, who will be 10 in March, and Cosmo, who is 8. They are my babies and are spoiled rotten, of course. Lacy is a real lady, laid back, very much queen of the castle, very sweet and affectionate and she can read my mind! Cosmo is all boy, full of fun and energy, loves to romp and play and is so sweet. Cosmo is a certified therapy dog and we visit the Children's Library twice a week where he gets lots of hugs and petting and the kids read stories to him. You can see pictures of my family and pets on my web pages at http://members.ispwest.com/LadyJ/. I belong to a Bichon List and know that the best way to find out about a breed is to talk to people who live with them. I appreciate all the information and suggestions. Samantha Yorkie has the first thing she needs for a long and happy life - people who love her! I don't have any pictures of Samantha yet, but will get some. Jeanette |
