is it safe for yorkies to sleep under the covers?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but a dog has died on here because of sleeping under the covers. To me it doesnt seem worth taking the chance. Here is the RIP thread http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34893

Cali and Tia LOVE to sleep under the covers, head and all. Tia always goes under the covers and crawls all the way to my legs and sleeps with her head on my legs every night. Cali sleeps right on my chest but she MUST be under the covers at all times ... if I try to move the covers, she sure as heck let's me know she's pissed!

Codie prefers to sleep on top of the covers (unless it's super cold) and directly against my side. I usually hug him in my sleep.

I LOVE sleeping with my 3 angels and I wouldn't have it any other way.

both of mine sleep under the covers.... always have... they even let my husband sleep with us! Lucky me!

I read that thread about the dog who died under the covers. So heartbreaking. It's made me leery of Jazz being under so many blankets, even though he heads down there and wants to sleep there. I just wait a few moments until he's asleep and move him up so that his face is only covered by one open-weave blanket. This has the advantage that I also get to cuddle with the head end of him rather that the tail end!

Believe me, they would be fighting to get out if they were smothering.
Mine never liked to go under the cover till the last couple of weeks since we have had a really cold spell, then around 4 am they dig the cover trying to get under, but after they are warm, they come back out.

As for "Trace," the 13-mo-old puppy who died under the blankets, I wonder how much he weighed or how much that might have to do with it....

On our bed we have lots of separate covers, not just a thick comforter or two. I myself get entangled in them sometimes and that's aggravating to me. For a little pup to want/need air and not be able to find its way out or to get entangled, well I don't like that idea.

I'm going to try wrapping Jewels up in a blanket that fits her and see if she's happy with that.

Oh, the ongoing questions that come with being a first-time yorkie mom! I'd be lost if I couldn't find such great answers from you all who have more experience.

This is funny as hubby and I were just discussing this very thing a couple days ago.

I had a friend who even last year was always telling me about her dog and how she liked to sleep under the covers. I was like, Dude! That's not safe! She'll suffocate! You'll kick her! How do you KNOW she wants under the covers? That's just so stupid!

ROFL Well by golly... I got my little yorkie... she burrows under the covers, and if you take her OUT, she goes right back under. She sleeps either by or on my tummy (however it happens to be).... so I have a little more sympathy for my friend now. Some dogs just really do like to sleep under the covers. And it won't kill them... at least it hasn't yet

Me too. I didn't know whether or not to bring in up. It was such a tragic story and one of the first I remember reading after joining. To be honest, Ginger loves it under the covers, and my shih slept their for 15 years...I can never decide the answer to this myself.

yup yup yup......Brandi is a "burrower" I wouldn't know how to stop her from going under the covers.....she's up and down and under and over the covers all night.....she has the doggie steps and she basically comes and goes as she pleases......

chester has slept with me since he was 8 wks old, he is now almost 4.5yrs old and he loves to go under the covers, he is 8.5 lbs. He paws atthe covers and that means he wants to go under. little heaters they are.....

I haven't let Eddie under the covers since Trace died. Not worth the risk to me.

ive had yorkies for over 20 years and they have all slept under the covers and ive had no problems but i would say if they are very tiny and very young not to do it just incase you roll on them and they are not big enough to move you or wake you up, i would guess that is what happened to the poor little one that died.
its kind of the same with sleeping with babies and toddlers , a baby might not wake you if it was in trouble but a toddler probley would, im use to sleeping with my yorkies so wake as soon as i feel movement and im a light sleeper and not very heavy and dont move much in bed.
