i agree. the prices are up there. its crazy. i'm glad i found a girl for a good price in my book. i still think $1000 is a lot. but i have 5 kids to provide for so it may not be a lot to others. my question is what is ya'lls defination of quailty? and do you not think it is possible to find a quailty yorkie for less than $1000? i would like to get a boy. and now that i have more money coming in i wold like to get one that is quailty. i have no idea if Troy is what ya'll think is quailty... please explain so i can be one of the cool kids!>

Gee I guess I got a real bargain with my $32.00 Yes that is thirty two dollars for my female Yorkie. She weighs 5 lbs and is gorgeous! I love her to death. Her coata proaly isn't silky but I don't care. I got her to love and not show. She could not be papered due to an eye ulcer so that's why she was so inexpensive.

HERE.. HERE.. I do not believe you should be able to tell someone they can not breed..if you don't want them to breed your line then spay them yourself and try selling them for outrages price spayed or neut.
Can there really be people that will pay that much for a dog..Gosh I don't think you pay that much for a champion horse?????? do you????? $8,000.00??? OMG

Alot of breeders are spaying or neutering their dogs before they are sold now and I think its great and they are being sold at the asking price. So many dishonest people out there this way a breeder knows for sure that their bloodlines arent out there being destroyed by BYBs

I guess from reading this, I didn't realize the cost used to be cheaper not to long ago. I just figured it was inflation. We only got Misha our maltese a year ago. Spent more for her than our other 2 put together. For us cost really didn't matter. We wanted a family & now we are having it. I knew someone that said to me after getting Misha (you paid how much for her? Are you crazy? What a waist.) I said "you smoke 2 pks of smokes a day, for how many years? I see that as a waste. You have your priorities, I have mine."
Although if the price came down, my hubby would kill me. I'd have a baseball team.

There does seem to be a strong mindset among some, that all yorkies should be perfect. if that were the case and only perfect yorkies were bred, the cost for yorkies would double or tripple.

I understand that the ideal situation would be to keep the breed perfect, but that's not gonna happen. They puppy mills are pouring poor quality yorkie into the market wevery day, and the unfortunate souls that can't afford to buy the perfect yorkie are falling victim to them.

I know I will take a whipping for this, but:

IMO if there were more pet quality yorkies being produced by honest small or (BYB as some of you refer to them) it might do more to put the rlarge puppy mills out of business then all the legislation that is out there.

Some people just want a yorkie, they don't care if it's doesn't have the perfect coat. And those are the ones that get taken by the puppy mills.

I personally would like to see an honest ad that stated this yorkie is not going to be perfect but it will give you just as much love as any show dog.

___Chachi___ stated that you get what you pay for. It would be nice if that were true. With yorkies, if you pay a low price there is a good chance that you will not get a top quality yorkie, however, paying a high price does not guarentee a top quality yorkie. In fact we have all seen posts where people have paid outrages prices for sickly underwieght poor quality pups.

I see it all as a matter of simple economics, supply vs. demand. Right now Yorkies are almost a craze. When people see the popularity of this dog and the prices that they're going for they decide "what the hey I can breed and make some money". If you look you'll see a definite increase in the number of yorkies being offered in the paper etc. As the numbers offered continues to rise so does the competition. Eventuallly competition will drive the prices down and alot of the backyard breeders and puppymills will pull out of the biz as it becomes less profitable. That will leave the exhibitor/ breeders that are still breeding to produce that elusive champion. My biggest worry is when it's all over will Yorkies even look like yorkies at all? What will happen when the market is flooded with dogs from people who don't care at all about maintaining the breed standard? Will yorkie become synomous with liver shunt, luxuating petellas, collapsed trechea, arched toplines, low tailsets, floppy ears and wirey coats? Who will protect the original developers' intensions?

Wow -- those are some reasonable prices -- that would be like $125 - $400 in US dollars, right?

I bought a $600 Yorkie but she was not well-bred. She was not in standard and had health problems. We lost her early, which was very difficult.

I paid a great deal more for the two I have now but I figure the cost to buy them is really just a drop in the bucket compared to what I will spend on them over time. It is also a drop in the bucket compared to what joy they bring into our lives. But ..... I have limits that I would have to stay within. I could not spend $8000 on a dog. Other things like food, shelter and college educations will have some priority.

I think the high prices must definately be down to Yorkies becoming fashionable in the States, from what you say.
Here the prices are much lower, you don't have to pay any more for a Yorkie than you would for most other small breeds,or any sized pedigree dog really.

But you do see lots of Yorkies about. They've always been really popular here, along with Westies for the small breeds, & you see lots of them about wherever you go.

As I said earlier, it was when I was looking for a Maltese that I found crazy prices, but you rarely see them here except at some dog shows.

In 1993 I paid $450 for a champion sired female. The most gorgeous face you would ever see. She is 13 yrs old now. Also the first one I bought was a male, runt of the liter in 1993 for $200. He never had the cute face and died at about age 8 yrs old I think. He had stomach problems, soft spot never closed and never did put on much weight.

Ginger I have now was $1150. And that was cheap for a female in south Texas. She has a cute face also.

If you do a cost year to year, it looks like the females will easily be over $2000 in a few years, unreal.

But remember, the males make better pets.
