I'm interested in breeding, not disrepect to other forums. There is absolutely nothing wrong with saying YT is the best forum out there and that no other forum could beat it! It's an opinion like all others and just because you're more active in another forum doesn't mean members of this one can't proclaim how great this forum is. ANYWAYS.. I'm so amazed at all the different opinions in breeding! I loveeeee itttttt. I'm learning so many new things on this thread, it's awesome! I don't plan on ever breeding myself but just to have some knowledge of it is always good. |
OMGosh... I didnt say anything negative! I was saying the opposite! I read many threads and don't post on them. I have been reading and learning on this thread. I just don't see why there are so many negative things posted on YT about other forums? The put down is what didnt have anything to do with breeding. Like I said before, why say anything bad? Please do not jump all over me either for asking a simple question! |
Oh no..please dont make this into an exuse to argue:( ..I certainly didnt want that at all;) I think its great the way this thread has turned out and I would hate it to turn negative towards the end:) There has been lots of great info on here and its been very interesting to read..thats all I was looking for:) I hope this doesnt cause any hard feelings with anyone at all because this is the first civilised thread Iv read on the breeding subject in a long time and its nice to see different points of view without anyone feeling bad or uncomfortable:) |
Yes it is funny how a thread can start out discussing one thing and end up being about something totally different towards the end ;) |

I'd be interested too! I don't know anyone (in real life LOL) that breeds dogs & I don't know who to turn to to get started. As I mentioned before I wouldn't be doing this for some time, but I would love to watch someone else go through the whole process! |
I've been thinking about breeding for 7 years..ever since i got my first yorkie and fell totally in love with this breed of dog. And thanks to the help of a breeder I made friends with, she is helping me. I have read and read and read ..But it is alway nice to be able to pick as many breeders brains as possible. That is the best way to learn. And I want to THANK THE BREEDERS who do offer there advice and help. I love this forum. Just please be nice to those of us who are just starting out. |
I would be so interested in breeding if I were older, but I don't think I have enough dedicated time and MONEY to do it! Regardless of how much I love dogs, I just can't see how I can afford it! And who would trust a breeding 20 year old? I wouldn't, lol What's the average age you think a breeder should be in order to be responsible enough and have the financial stability to afford it and to get started? |
Natalie, can you get pet insurance there?? I have pet insurance and it covers almost everything..how else could I afford to take my girls in every two weeks for checks ups?? lol.We are given a card (like a credit card) and after each vet visit, shot etc,the card is put into a machine and Im off:) Its the insurance that pays my vet for now;) I have full insurance that covers spaying/neutering,check ups,shots,c-section,chip inplant, all surgeries, dental care and the care of new born pups for the first 4 weeks which is great because this includes tail docking, dew claw removal, check ups and anything else a new born pup may need the first month of its life. I pay more for Jess than for Lady because as I am planning on breeding her I have to pay a small yearly suppliment that covers the pups, but all in all I pay 100€ (just over $100) for Jess and 40€ for Lady (over $40) a year. Here insurance is a little more expaensive for females.Could you get something like that there?? Its a great help beleive me;) |
on a lighter note... Can I tell you a funny story about my first and only breeding experience? It's funny looking back on now but what a mess! When my poodle was about 3 or 4 years old, I put an ad for stud service in my local paper. In our small town, I had never seen another red toy poodle and thought others with females in the surrounding areas might be having a hard time finding studs so I put the word out. Well, a couple from Houston (about an hour or so away from us) called me up and said they had seen the ad (or heard about it) and were interested. They happened to be going on vacation at the time their female, Penny, would be "ready" so they asked if they could leave her with me for a week. I can hear it now - "They DIDN'T suggest that!!". Oh yes, and I fell for it! My poor Dax was a nutcase the entire week that girl in heat was in our house! I had to put her in the bathroom with a baby gate up because I didn't want to completely close her up and he cried and scratched at the carpet. It was so pitiful! Well, I did all the research I possibly could (this was before internet - at least where I was concerned) and talked to a lady I worked with that was experienced with breeding and when that "magic day" for Penny came, I thought I was prepared. Dax was about two inches or so shorter than Penny so I was told that I may have to "help them out". I got a couple fat phone books for him to stand up on and held him steady. He was quite the man I must say and took care of most of it himself but I was nervous about the tie. Did I mention that this was Penny's first time too??? So, anyway, after they tied, I had to help Dax put his leg over her body and turn around (yep, that was a new one to me - I didn't know they did that) and make sure both of them laid quietly until the tie was over so they wouldn't get hurt. I think that lasted about 30 minutes. After all was over, I separated them again and left them resting while I went out to the garage and told my husband what I had just done. He got such a kick out of it! Well, it worked on that one and only try and we were blessed with a healthy litter of little copper penny colored beautiful poodle pups and I got pick of the litter but don't think I would ever do it quite like that again! Looking back on it, I can't believe these people trusted me with their little girl during a time like that - I know I wouldn't just hand Tatum over to someone to breed if they weren't an experienced highly qualified breeder. Anyway, if you've ever experienced the breeding thing, you might understand how funny it was. Wouldn't have missed it for the world though! |
lol..I bet that was humiliating for the virgin couple!;) Their first time and here they are being watched and manipulated..I bet they never forgot that! lol.Im glad all went well,I bet it was worth it in the end:) |
mentor Jodi, don't feel bad about show people not talking to you...some don't even talk to me and I am one of them..but I am very low on the totem pole. Mentors are hard to find. I think this forum is so valuable for anyone who wants to learn. You can learn anything from books and the internet. You don't have to learn from a Yorkie person either..toy breeders share alot in common..and I find Maltese and Pom people more friendly. Pups are conceived , gestated and whelped the same way..so I talk to them also. |
Thank you! I'm not a breeder either, but i do have a 5 lb yorkie i breed to a two lb male. If they are't yorkies , then what are they? My 5 lb is AKC and my 2 lb is APRI. I have a 4 lb AKC male and 6 lb AKC female. I also have a 2 lb female ,which i am having spayed next week. I do no better than to breed under 5 lbs. I don't like all these Breeders that say they are the only ones who are responsible. I only sell my yorkies as pets and not to brokers or puppy mills. Besides the price of a show dog yorkie prevents some people from enjoying this cute adorable dog. My yorkies are all in the house, kept clean and treated like royalty. |
? No one would question the fact your dogs are Yorkies. If a breeder disregards the standard it does effect quality..JMO The most expensive Yorkies I see advertized are from pet breeders..Jeff Dane's, breeders on Puppyfind.com..and I recently talked with a member here who paid $8000 for a pet quality male from a pet breeder. |
$8,000 is ALOT of money for a pet quality yorkie! The sad thing is,the pups on breeder x´s site arent even cute..I saw one once that had eyes on the side of its head and it was one of the expensive ones! When I breed Jess I will be looking to improve her faults through her pups.I was told that finding a male with a short snout and silk coat etc (on top of being a good size, healthy etc) her pups should be perfect in size and in quality.Pat,what do you think? |
