I am NOT trying to start a fight. I have been visiting as a guest for several months now. I have read wonderful posts but have been amazed on some others. Yorkietalk I thought would be wonderful to chat on. I have two yorks and the one is a tiny 3 pound one. The other is 6 pounds. I have noticed many people bashing others for having a tiny yorkie and I dont understand this. Many on here are so quick to judge and claim these tiny ones are unhealthy and no one should buy them. I have no problem with people being concerned of a dogs health but do you have to be ignorant when making comments about this issue? If so many of you think the small ones are bad to purchase then why are so many people on here complaining that their dogs havent stayed as small as breeders promised? I lost count on how many times I have read people saying their dog grew bigger. Practically everyone of these people then go on to say it doesnt matter and they love their dog no matter what. Then I realized that many of these same people are the ones putting down the smaller yorks. However, werent you the ones looking to buy a smaller york to begin with? Many of you say size doesnt matter but why then did so many of you when searching for your york look for the smaller ones? Why does it seem wrong to admit on here that you wanted a smaller york and it just didnt happen? I have seen several people get bashed from being honest that they wanted a small york. Whether small or big they are all adorable. But can we try not to bash these little ones. It really makes me think so many people on here are actually jealous. I'm not trying to start a fight but I had to get this off my chest. Everyone here has a beautiful dog and this bashing on each other is sad. I never wished to offend anyone in particular on here but do hope it makes some people think before saying such harsh words to others. |
i dont think alot of bashing is because the smaller yorkies..its when ppl come on and say that "hey, im thinking about breeding my 3 pound female". WHich is stupid and dumb..If theres alot of bashing on ppl getting smaller yorkies than I guess i have missed them. BTW...WELCOME to yt.. :):D :) |
Mine ended up being SMALLER than I hoped. I have 2 yorkies...one is 3lbs and the other is 3.5lbs. When I was looking for a yorkie, I wanted one between 4-6lbs and mine ended up actually being SMALLER than I had hoped for! But I love them anyway. They are perfect for me. :) |
Thank you for welcoming me. I just read through a post where someone was looking for a small york. She automatically got put down for wanting a small one. One person even said to her all tiny ones are unhealthy. The poor person was just trying to find a dog and I dont think being told she was wrong for wanting a small one was a very kind thing to do. I am glad you missed many of the things I have read because its very sad. |
I've been here a long time and have to say this - No one bashes ANYONE for having a tiny - it's the people BREEDING tinies ....and there are some people out there breeding very very small females - that's only done so THEY can make more money. I've never seen one post where a member was bashed for having a tiny yorkie - they're adorable ! EDITED TO ADD - A warning about having a small yorkie is very different than bashing someone. Some people see 'tiny' and have no clue as to what it really means to have one. One of my very good friends has a very small little female - she would NEVER EVER breed her - and she'll tell you it's much more stressful with a smaller one - She has 2 yorkies - and worries much more about her little one as they can get hurt so easily. but it's not Bashing to offer information on the size differences & what to expect. |

Again not trying to start anything. I do consider someone saying all tiny yorks are unhealthy as a form of bashing. Some people on here have dogs that are very small. My one is 3 pounds and when I read a comment like that I am offended. My boy is healthy and that isnt something I enjoyed reading. The person that made the comment doesnt know every tiny york in the world so why make a comment like that? I do find the comment offensive and I think any person with a smaller york would agree. |

but I just want to point out again - we have so many people with tinies here and I've never seen them bashed. I love yorkies of all sizes and would love a very small one myself - but I also know there's alot more involved having one and I'd be probably even MORE over-protective than I already am Mandy ...you shouldn't take a statememt like that personally - it's just flat out true they can get hpyglycemia alot easier than a larger dog - and you have to remember - people may make comments - it doesn't mean they're putting down anyone. |

did they actually say all real little yorkies are unhealthy or did they say "alot of little yorkies sometimes tend to have majior health problems? there is a difference... |
you got that right v.. well said:thumbup: |
The way I see it, "unhealthy" is one thing...."more prone to injury" is another. I think the meanings are misread often times? Kasey is healthy as an ox, but he IS more likely to get hurt doing the same thiing our 5 and 7 pounders do w/out problem. |
First, welcome to YT! :) I love YT because it's one of the few places that I DON'T get bashed for having a teapot...different subject I know, but I've always found the people here to be incredibly accepting of all yorkies What I think we get is people who really care about these little dogs and who hate to see someone getting in over their head with something they don't understand. Tinies usually do require extra caution and care...just look back through the posts for all of the ones who haven't made it because of something a slightly larger dog would live through. YT'rs just love to educate! |

I have no idea if this is ok to do but I copied the one persons comment. Many are asking if they were warning or bashing. Here it is so you can read for yourself. Let me point out first of why I take this comment wrong. Sure I know there is no such thing as a teacup. But saying if they weigh less then 4 pounds as adults, their organs become too tiny to be healthy. If that isnt being rude then I dont know what is. My guy is less then that and he is healthy. The 90 pound comment speaks for itself. The comment was this........ "Please don't get a Yorkie that is too small. Just as humans must weigh a minimum amount, so must Yorkies. If they weigh less than about 4 pounds as adults, their organs become too tiny to be healthy. There is no such thing as a "tea-cup" Yorkie, and responsible breeders won't sell them. You wouldn't want a 90-pound adult human, so don't get a 3-pound adult Yorkie!" |
Mandy - that's one comment out of THOUSANDS - when you're here a while you learn to brush those off...her intention was probably good and it was just the wording. |
i actually read that post just now..i dont think its "bashing" but its uneducated on their part! |

actually theres alot of healthy 90 pound humans....lol |
Yeah, don't worry about that. She is uneducated. I'm sorry if it hurt your feelings. :( I have 3lbs, healthy yorkies, so you're in good company. ;) WELCOME to YORKIETALK! Hope you stay awhile!!!!! :D |

I truly hope you are right but I do hope you can see why others would take it wrong. |
OK, I admit - when I was shopping for my pup, I did (think) I wanted a tiny one - around 3/4 pounds. But...that's when ignorace was bliss! lol My Abbie is 6lbs at one year old, and I hope she doesn't grow anymore. If she does, that's fine; but, it just makes it easier on my back (being a decreped old lady that I am) to have a lap dog that is acutally carrying size. If she grows more, she just won't be wagged around by me, that's all. I do NOT, however, have any patience with people pushing under-standard sized pups for $$$$, and if I'm blessed to get another Yorkie, I will look for a breeder whose line is within standard. Though I don't advocate seeking out smaller pups, and :( on supply/demand making the market more open for tinies to be bred; I DO applaud those who give these l'il guys'n'gals homes. The amount of care and worry must be very nerve-wracking. just my :twocents: |
I've heard that often it's harder for vets to operate on the tinies too and that often they'll refuse. Don't know if there is much truth in that. I truly admire anyone who is able have a tiny. I think I'd be a nervous wreck. (as I type this, Ginger is flying off the back of the couch and racing up the stairs playing with the cat)...I don't think MY heart could take it if I had a tiny. That being said, I love the tinies...they're adorable and holding one is the best thing ever! I'm glad there are so many with good homes. |
:) personally i would not want a dog smaller than what Mason is right now 5 pounds.. and sometimes that bothers me...not for his health but for his well being in general. like jumping off stuff and such .id be one nervous nelly with a smaller yorkie than him......i was a wreck when he was a 2 pound puppy...;) |
I think you all are very nice people. Never wanted to start anything negative but that comment wasnt the first I ran into. Regardless I will try to ignore the bad I come across. Just so you know I dont support the the breeders producing the tiny ones for big bucks. I got my guy for next to nothing because he wasnt wanted because he was so small. Ironic I got him for under 300 and some would have paid big $$ I will try to get pictures of him on here soon and of my other one. Their names are Oliver and Jacob. |

Cant wait to see pics. :D :D WE LOVE PICS!! There are alot of threads or posts on here at times that I just completely bypass and dont even read...sometimes I will but im really trying to s tay out of threads like that. ALl you can do is ignore and look at some of the posters as "uneducated" and dont know what there talking about. You will also find that some threads on here are started just to start a fight. Thats what I call a troll thread!! Good luck and again welcome to YT!! :):) |
My babies came from standard sized parents. Their dad was 4lbs and their mom was 5lbs and they ended up just throwing small puppies. If you are going to get a small yorkie, do not patronize those breeders who breed teeny tinies to produce teeny tinies. Look for a breeder who breeds within the standard and happens to produce the smaller ones. There are lots of those breeders out there and those are the ones that produce the healthy tinies. ;) |

1. Wait until she's older 2. Wait until all of her adult teeth come in 3. Help her gain a few more ounces (about 2-3 ounces -- it may not sound like a lot but for her tiny frame it's plenty) 4. Have a team of specialists perform the operation Spaying her will be VERY expensive (we're talking anywhere from $1,500 - $2,000). Plus they will want to run a series of blood tests before the operation and keep her afterwards for a few days. Other than that, they said Cali is an extremely well bred and healthy dog. They all loved her and were kissing her the entire visit. So yes, a tiny dog DOES in fact require a lot of extra care and attention. Also their vet bills are almost always higher. For example, I have found that it costs more just to give them a routine blood test. |
When I read something that I find a bit "odd" or "not so true" with what I know.......I brush it off and don't let it bother me. Sometimes people speak because of a personal experience they have had and maybe that one comment was coming from someone that had a "bad" experience with a small unhealthy yorkie. I have a 6 1/2 pound yorkie and a 10 1/2 pound maltese. They play great together but if I had a smaller Yorkie, I would worry. He is full "terrier" (Toby the terror is what we call him but he is so sweet too) and so plays a little on the rough side. The maltese is gentle when they play but has a considerable weight advantage. I find that Yorkies are such "attached" dogs that he is under foot ALL the time where as the Maltese lays on the back of the couch watching from her perch. Special people should have the "special" small yorkies as there are other considerations that have to be thought about as many have mentioned in prior posts. Small yorkies are adorable but we all have our preferences as to size, breed, and the sex. Enjoy your baby and let the comments that offend you go in one ear and out the other. Take advantage of the "good" suggestions and comments that so many have left regarding small yorkies. And by the way, WELCOME TO YT!!!!! |
