When to Neuter My little guy is going to be big. Probably around 12 pounds. He's already around 7 1/2 lbs at 4 months. My doctor wants to neuter him now. He still has a ton of baby teeth (and many adult teeth) and his testicals haven't dropped. What do you think? Also, I've read bad things about the rabies shot. When should I go ahead and do that?

![]() I would have it done when all his adult teeth are in (5 to 6 mos)..then the vet can pull any retained baby teeth. All the vets I know suggest that age and also rabies at 4 months. Good luck

![]() Thanks for replying so quickly. I'm really stressed about deciding becuase when I say the vet wants to do it now, what I mean is I have an appointment tomorrow morning. He wants to do the neuter, the 3rd set of puppy shots, and the rabies shot. I'm already decided that we won't be doing the rabies shot tomorrow but I'm not sure about the other two. Is it usual to have to have the teeth removed professionally?

![]() The reason for waiting until the adult teeth come in, is to prevent putting them under anthesthia twice. Sometimes all the baby teeth fall out, especially in a larger Yorkie...but many times a couple many be retained. My vet told me once that he worked for me..I paid him for his advise and good care of my dogs. You as the owner are capable of reading, asking questions of other fanciers and making a wise decision concerning your dog. There are many things we have to rely on the vet's knowledge for, but some things are not life and death and we can make a judgement. Tell your vet you want to finish with the puppy shots, then in 2 weeks a rabies, then at 5 to 6 months neutering. Nothing in this advise is risking the heakth of your Yorkie..it is wise not to overload on shots and neutering all at once. Last edited by YorkieRose; 05-09-2005 at 04:38 PM.

| ![]() My vet said 6 months. I waited a couple more (I think it was at 8 months) so Baxter could have his 2nd set of teeth out (some of them get double teeth and they should come out). He had a few doubles, so the vet neutered him and took the double teeth out at the same time.

![]() I agree with the other replies. Wait until he is around 7 months old and then he can get any baby teeth pulled that haven't come out. No sense in having him put under twice for neutering and teeth pulling! Best wishes!

![]() Thanks everyone for your replies and advice. I just got back from the vet. I called before I went to see exactly what they had planned for today's visit and that was when the tech said they had all their "need to do's" under the same date, and they wanted to wait at least a month and a half for the neutering, and two months for the rabies shot. So, we're home now with just the puppy shots and I feel really greatful that's how it went. I feel more knowledgable now and better prepared. Thanks everyone.
