Thumbs down I HATE Petco!

Friday I wanted to get Brutus' nails cut since he won't let me do it. My regular groomer wasn't open so I decided to take him to Petco since I wanted to buy him a new sweater anyway. WELL what a disaster! First she hardly even cuts the nails and then she decides that they were sharp so she'd dremel them.

Well the freaking dremel got stuck in Brutus' beard and the Petco "groomer" was screaming. Thank God she was able to turn it off before something really bad could happen but man that scared the he!! out of me! I kind of lost it on her and they had to cut a small piece of his beard. She told me she was so sorry and she didn't charge me. Yeah okay like I was going to pay anything for almost really hurting my baby!!

He's fine thankfully but I felt so bad for him and guilty that I couldn't leave the stupid store without buying a lot of treats and toys.

I've learned my lesson and will NEVER take him to Petco for anything again!

OH WOW - what the heck is so hard about clipping a nail ? A DREMEL ?? OMG that could have been a tragedy if it touched his skin !

There are way too many untrained people working in industries that need training - PETCO is a big enough company they can afford to hire people who know what they're doing & if they don't ...TEACH them and don't let them deal with the public till they know what the heck they're doing !!

I don't get it at all...

poor Brutus - is he ok ?? Are YOU ok ?????

I'm okay now but I was shaking so bad at the time! I thought he was really hurt! He was so scared and it broke my heart but you know how they are, they bounce back. But not ME!

He'll let me give him haircuts and anything else I want to do to him but he refuses to let me cut his nails. For some reason with a groomer he just stands still. With me he wimpers and cries and I never even hurt him!

Absolutely

It's a shame you see this at hospitals with humans too. Unlicensed personnel being used for procedures because of the 'nursing shortage'. It's quite scary

Anyhow, I am so happy that he is okay. Sorry you had that scare

Angry

I also hate Petco. Aren't they the store that killed a s**tzu by overheating it with the dryer. I know there was another story similar to that, but it was the one where the dog was litteraly baked, but this one was a bit less dramatic, but the dog still died.
Anyway, I have Petco becasue my Greyhound Rescue group used to do Meet and Greets there. The groomers would come by and clip their nails for us for free. I had on Grey who had really long nails and he had a really long quick as well so we had to clip his nails on a weekly basis. Well this dip shi* started cutting and cut the nails really short, deep into the quick. The poor baby started yelping and crying and I told the groomer that the dog couldn't have very much cut off of the nail, and I explained the dogs issue. The groomer said he knew, but he was "quicking" the nail for me. He said that it doesn't hurt the dog and if you keep cutting the nail into the quick everytime you trim the nail the quick will eventually get shorter What and IDIOT. Of course it hurt that poor baby. Why the fuc& is the baby screaming and crying if it didn't hurt.
Luckily I caught him after 2 nails. I told him to get his hands off of the dog and if he so much as petted her I would break his fingers I was SOOOOOO Mad!

I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I would be so angry too and scared.

I wanted to share with you that mine were not the greatest with letting me trim their nails. Emilee was always fine, but not the others. Now, after they have had their bath and still wrapped tightly in a towel, they let me trim their nails with no problem. I just take one foot out of the towel at a time. No squirming or anything. You might try that.

i took my standard poodle to petco and got him groomed, a week later i took him to the vet, while checking his temp in his ear they pulled out a cotton ball from down inside his ear!! (groomers put them in there while giving a bath to keep the water out) but they forgot to take it out and it had been in there for a week and i didnt know it!! luckily it didnt cause an infection but if i hadn't gone to the vet who knows how long it would have been until i noticed it! poor baby! i went back to petco that day to get my money back and tell the groomer what they had done they acted like they had no idea how that happened!

I am so sorry for your bad experience, they should never use dremels. If they want the nail not to be sharp, they should use a simple nail file, that is what I did.

For the other poster about the quick, it is true that if your dog has a long quick that if they cut the quick a little at a time, the quick will receed and go back. But it is painful for them and I woulden't do it unless the dog had really long nails to where it was causing them to have trouble with the nails such as walking.

I worked at Petco for awhile last year. It is true that they don't train their groomers well. I knew how to cut nails before I worked there, I been doing it for years. My co-workers had no idea what to do and many times I had to clip the nails for them. Then another co-worker didn't get all the soap out after washing them off. So I had to wash them off for them because if you leave soap on them it will cause them to have a lot of skin irritation. Besides the one groomer that was there, I was the only one who knew how to do anything and I was constantly correcting my co-workers mistakes. They should require employees either to have experience in grooming dogs or they should have to go through a few classes to learn.

One girl who worked in the grooming department took a slicker brush and brushed one of the rabbits there that was for sale at Petco. You never ever brush a rabbit with a slicker brush!! So the rabbit ended up with blood everywhere and scared to death of people and getting groomed!!

Arck!! horrid!!! It is places like this that give groomers bad names!

It is true that many dogs who make a fuss for their owners let the grooemrs do it no problems. And for the dogs that fuss for everyone, many groomers are well trained to know how to clip their nails, safely and with no discomfort.
I have a somwhat new client that broguht me in a yorkie and I do his nails. They were terribly long at first. But I do them every 2 weeks, I NEVER quik them, I only "tip" them. The dogs nails will be a good length in another 3 visits.

Quiking does happen, and for me it is by accident and rare and NEVER on purpose.

How sad for Brutus! Thank God these babies don't hold grudges! I don't blame you, I'd be ticked too.

I agree. The part that really gets me is not only don't the groomers know what they are doing in places like Petsmart, they charge almost the same price as a professional groomer does. My local Petsmart charges $47.00 for a Shih Tzu amd $42.00 for a Yorkie. The professional groomer that I use charges $51.00 for my Shih Tzu and $46.00 for my Yorkie. For the extra $4.00 a dog it is well, well, worth it. My groomer is fantastic, I have to prebook their appts 6 wks in advance, she is so busy. But she does a great job, she uses hand dryers, and has years of experience and awards galore. She even used to groom Frank Sinatra's dogs when he came to town to appear in the casinos. But most importantly, I trust her.
We do not have a Petco around us but we do have a Petsmart. I have watched them groom dogs before and most of the groomers seem very young and inexperienced and the haircuts on the dogs do not look nearly as good as those from a professional groomer. No thanks, not for my babies. I blow the extra $8.00 it costs me, for stuff a lot less important than their grooming is.

A dremel???? JC...

My vet only charged $10.50 to take a nail off that was hanging, then she clipped the rest of Adonis's nails. This was just yesterday. Might want to call and see how much the vet charges. Most will do this for a very low price.

I picked up a nail clipper yesterday, and will learn how to do this properly. Many here said they do it right after a bath, that way the nails are soft and don't make that "click" sound when you clip. The nail clipper I got also has a "file" with it, and some stuff to put on if they bleed.

Jeez, no wonder I do all this for my dogs. I've really heard a lot of horror stories from these places.
