Lovin' 2 Girls Donating Member | Door monitor Abbie Because of the many tragic losses read about from YTers, we've been really working on our pooches concerning the front door. When someone comes in or goes out, the door is not closed and greetings cannot be exchanged until both dogs are lying DOWN. They may be squirming from excitement, but no one gets "hello"s until they are DOWN. OK, so, this evening dh (Mike) came home from work, and I was in the den with Hannah. Mozart and Abbie were waiting in the hall to greet The Master <g>. Suddenly, I heard Michael laughing so hard. Then, he said: "Yes, I'm laughing at you-guys! You did good, Abbie! LOL" Later, I learned that Abbie was sitting obediently, waiting for the door to close so she could get her hugs. But, Mozart was NOT! He kept prancing around, and wouldn't lie DOWN. Suddenly, she gets up, runs over and pokes him in the shoulders as if to say "Lie DOWN, so he can come in!" And, Mozart did! LOLOLOL She then retreated to her previous spot to assume the DOWN position!

| Oooooh what smart babies you have! That's great. I bought a baby gate for my front porch to keep my 2 from "escaping" when the door opens, but I like your way better!

| My dogs both stay so well - whenever I go to the door. I just say "stay" about 10 feet from the door and they both sit right down. I tell my little Yorkie to sit while I let the other dog in and out - and he doesn't budge. And I certainly agree - this can be a life-saving behavior...... Carol Jean |

| Duncan has done this too. Duncan ran out the first time at 3 months old and ran after the mail man, and got pepper stayed right in the face Second time he saw a Chi passing by and Duncan pushed the screen door open and was just about to bite him on the neck when he heard my voice and he stopped. Poor Chi he threw himself on the floor I thought he had fainted. Now we put the xpen in front of the front door, making a half circle, that way to go out we go thou the gate first and make sure it is placed correctly before opening the front door. We are able to leave the door open to bring in things from the car and not worrying about him running out.

Lovin' 2 Girls Donating Member | Thanks everyone I failed to mention in the OP that we, too, had a very narrow escape with Abigail last June. We had visitors from out of state and while saying our good-byes at the door, Miss Abbie flew right out the open door!! (That's why the DOWN rule, while the door is open) By the time Mike got to her she was IN THE STREET! His voice was full of fear and aggravation, so of course she wouldn't come to him! Not that he could help it. I'd probably have been much worse! So, she just laid down right in the middle of the street! A car was coming, so dh put HIMSELF between the car and Abigail!! Though I understood his impulse, I scolded him. I love my dog, but I'm not willing to sacrifice my dh of 32 years to misjudgment. Anyway, he explained: "Well, I knew they would at least see me!" And, of course, she was recovered and lives to be 'door monitor' of her domain.
