Thanks everyone
I failed to mention in the OP that we, too, had a very narrow escape with Abigail last June. We had visitors from out of state and while saying our good-byes at the door, Miss Abbie flew right out the open door!! (That's why the DOWN rule, while the door is open) By the time Mike got to her she was IN THE STREET! His voice was full of fear and aggravation, so of course she wouldn't come to him! Not that he could help it. I'd probably have been much worse! So, she just laid down right in the middle of the street! A car was coming, so dh put HIMSELF between the car and Abigail!! Though I understood his impulse, I scolded him. I love my dog, but I'm not willing to sacrifice my dh of 32 years to misjudgment. Anyway, he explained: "Well, I knew they would at least
see me!"
And, of course, she was recovered and lives to be 'door monitor' of her domain.
