| I'm Worried About Tee Tee Tia has always been SUPER healthy (thank god). This past month she actually put on 1 lb and my vet said I should put her on a little diet. She should weigh 3 lbs (and she always has) but recently she got all the way up to 4 lbs -- even though 1 lb doesn't sound like a lot, my vet said for her tiny frame it's way too much. So I basically cut out the treats. I still free feed them dry food like I always did but no more treats. So Tia finally did lost 1 lb and I was happy. But today I weighed her and she's actually under 3 lbs now ... she weighs 2 lbs and 12 oz. Should I be concerned? Her appetite is great and she doesn't seem dehydrated (I pulled her skin and it snapped right back into place). But I think anything under 3 lbs is not right for her. Ok I'm more then concerned, I'm really worried. I'm probably overreacting but I can't help it. I don't know what to do. I'm leaving Friday to pick up Cali in California, so I don't know if I should do anything about it before I leave ... or should I just wait until I come back and then see how she is progressing? Should I be worried about this?? I called my vet and he said not to worry right now because when he saw her 1 month ago, she was in great shape. He said if she loses any more weight to bring her in immediately. I'm bringing Cali home, plus the 1 year anniversary of Katie and my mother's passing is next week. So I really have a lot on my mind and I'm excited about getting Cali, yet stressed out at the same time. Am I overreacting? I know I'm really emotional right now (plus I have my period on top of everything), so I know I'm a wreck. But what should I do? I'm just don't want anything to happend to my baby. Maybe I should just take her in for a blood test just to ease my mind? What do you all think??

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | give that baby a treat ! If she seems fine - try not to stress too much - I know what you mean about 1 lb being alot - I tried to get Chanel to lose a pound (or 2 lol) cause I cannot feel her ribs - but if she was losing too much weight - I'd be a bit concerned too - if it makes YOU feel better - take her in and let the vet look her over.... |

| Jen I wouldn't worry about it unless she loses more. I don't know if I'm the only one but I think you need to get a second opinion. I think it's ridiculous that your vet would tell you Tee Tee needs to lose a pound Yorkies generally have a standard frame and actually 3 lbs is below the standard so I'm not really sure why he would tell you 4 lbs is overweight for her? You've seen Coco and she has a tiny frame and tiny bones but she's a healthy almost 5 lbs. I would keep doing what you've been doing and consider a second opinion because I think it's crazy that he would tell you to put her on a diet I think you should feed her normal stuff and don't worry too much. If she continues to lose weight then get a blood test but otherwise I'm sure she's fine. Just fatten her up a little please, I think your vet needs to be hit upside the head. Poor Tee Tee

| Trust me, Tia isn't starving. She gets free fed dry food and bully sticks all day long. I just cut out the treats (chicken and lamb sticks, yogurt drops and other homemade treats). The only treat I've been giving her is a baby carrot once a day (usually at night). So it's not like she's starving to death. But being overweight isn't healthy either. At 4 lbs, she had a tummy. I don't want my baby to be overweight -- I want her to be at her ideal weight. 3 lbs is perfect for her. She may look big in pictures (because of all her hair), but in person she's really small. So for her body frame, 4 lbs is just way too much. I don't want her to be either over or under weight.

| When they are that small, gaining or losing a few ounces on their tiny frame makes a big difference on them. Are her ribcage bones more prominent then they should be? If she seems to feel ok, I wouldn't worry about it right now. I would monitor her and if she loses more and you can feel her bones on her ribcage more evidently, then take her in. When Gizmo came he was 2 1/2 pounds and he looked healthy at that weight but he has put on a 1/2 pound since then, his isn't fat but I do feel a little layer of meat on his bones that wasn't there before. If he gains anymore it wouldn't be good for his frame either. |

I just don't know what to do ... should I take her to the vet NOW or wait until I get back from California? I'm just scared someting will happen to her once I leave and I know I'm not going away for a weeek (only overnight) but I can't help worrying. There's probably nothing wrong, I'm probably making this worse than it is.

| I bet she just lost more then you intending just because you cut out all of the treats! I agree w/ the vet.......she is probably fine and healthy, BUT if she keeps losing, take her in ASAP! I'm sure you aren't starving your baby, but a treat every now and then wouldn't hurt her!

| I know how you feel. In fact that is why I am having such a hard time today leaving Gizmo at the vet for his dental surgery. Last time I left one of my babies...she never came back home...So it's hard to get over things you've been through before. Weigh her everyday and give her a few treats. Try not to worry and pic up your new baby. She should be ok for a few days. And by then if she has lost more weight you will know for sure something isn't right. |

| This is just my opinion, and it might be a little overprotective because of the loss of my Starr, but I'd take her to the vet before you go to California. Number one, to ease your mind, and number two, to really make sure that she's okay. You're not leaving until Friday, so just try giving her HALF of the treats she used to get, you know a happy medium, and see if the weight starts coming back. If she starts to plump up in the next two days, she's more than likely fine and that was just too much of a reduction in treats. Tracy and Luna |

Like Tracy said.........to ease your mind and make you feel better and know for sure everything is okay, go ahead and take her in the to vet. It wouldn't hurt anything and it would help you feel more at ease before you left! Who likes to travel when they are worried about their baby at home? Good luck and we wish her the best.......let us know if you go back and what is said! Well, just keep us posted anyway!

| I understand completely. I was worried about Trixie when she porked up and got sort of lazy after her first litter. I just put her on a lower fat food and threw that rope a few extra times. I wasn't worried about her weight so much as I was concerned if it was unhealthy. Come tomorrow she'll have someone there to give her a nice little work out. How excited are you, BTW? |
