About Keeping A Pregnant Yorkie i hope you can help me. kirby was a stud to daisy. daisy is due to have babies november 20th. the owners are going out of town from nov 12th thru the 16th. they want me to take care of daisy while they are gone. i have no problem doing this but my question is......will this cause a problem with daisy? i have delivered puppies before and know exactly what i am doing but i have never cared for another in this late of pregnancy who wasnt my own. i quess my question is.....will this be unhealthy for her? she only stayed at my house for 5 days while she was in heat. she is not very familiar with my home. i am rambling now so i will let you read this and get back to me thanks so much

| I really don't have an exact answer for you....one thing I would do, is make sure they bring a lot of things with her and their smells on it. It should keep her from stressing too much, I think.

| I don't know that I'd want the "liability" if something goes wrong. Also, if the female needs a C section, who will pay? Are you "positive" you would get reimbursement? I can't say I'd do it, but thats up to you, not me! |

| i am thinking it is a bad idea. i love little daisy to death but i think she would be better at home. also, the owners should have someone who knows her very well to stay at their home until they get back. i, of course, could be on call if she goes into labor. the owners just trust me so much, they want her to stay with me.

| I think it would be fine, just make sure you get a written agreement writing down all the particulars: -how long she is to stay with you (drop off, pick up) -that you will be reimbursed in full if the dog incurs any medical costs -that you are authorized to authorize any needed medical treatment for the dog -that, despite your best efforts, if anything should go wrong at all, they will not hold you accountable (ie, death of a puppy, early labor, complications...) Just type something up including all these things, have the owners and yourself sign it, and it would be good if you could get a non-partial witness or two to sign also. |

| Thats what I was thinking the move might stress her. Do they have to leave her at this time? |

| They usually want to be close to some one familiar at this point. Not having that and strange surroundings could stress her out. If they absolutely must leave her I agree with having something in writing for clearance of responsibility if something goes wrong and to take her to the vet if need be.

| Hmmmmm. Well I would be afraid to do it. It is a great compliment they want you to take care of her. But stressing her that late in her pregnancy could cause problems, possibly causing her to go into to labor earlier. She might be fine, but Im sure it will stress her. Ugh.....Im not sure I would want that responsiblity. I just had an extremley sick female after whelping, I certainly wouldnt want you in that postion or a C section with a dog not even yours. I think she should be left in her own enviroment with someone there, but if you do decide to do it for whatever reason I would definitely get some things in writing as mentioned earlier. One good thing is you say your experienced with birth, not everyone has that knowledge, so if something did go wrong you would be able to see it quickly and Im sure the owners have thought of that. |

| If they are going out of town - they are going to leave Daisy somewhere - and I think you are probably the best one to care for her. First of all - she probably won't have her puppies while they're gone - but, if she does - you have some experience.. I think I would have them bring Daisy to your house as many times as possible before they leave.....just come over and visit - and perhaps even let her spend a night there. This may help her feel a little more comfortable when she stays with you. ****** But do be sure to have an agreement with them -- that you can take her to the vet if she appears to be having any problems at all ---at their expense, of course. I would make this a "must" -- if they wanted me to babysit. You certainly wouldn't want to end up with a little dog needing a C-section --and the possibility of it hadn't even been discussed.... Also - to make the vet more comfortable - have them write a note (like you would have the parents do if you were babysitting a child) - giving you permission to get whatever medical care is necessary for their dog while you are caring for it. Cover your bases...... Good luck - and let's hope you don't have to deliver any puppies. Carol Jean |

| thank you for all your advise. i am still torn on what to do. the owners are having a family reunion and staying at a beach house approx 2 hrs away. i have my two babies who still act like puppies...running around the house like mad dogs. i think this might stress daisy out. daisy is such a sweet little girl and i don't want anything to happen to her. although i feel like her puppies will be like my grandchildren, i think the owners should stay home with her in her own home. again, thanks for all of your advise
